I'm so glad to hear that Saoirse is improving and that she got some insulin at last. :) Of course she still loves you - how could you ever doubt that? You can be sure she's feeling better when she's managed to remove her IV and is letting the hospital staff know that she'd much rather be home by being cranky with the staff and loving with you. It sounds as though her mouth is irritated, and quite possibly bruised as well from the pressure from the procedure but I'm sure that will continue to improve until her eating is back to normal - it's just going to take time. And wonderful, wonderful news that you're able to bring her home today. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Oh my goodness, I've just been catching up on all of this. Mogs, I wish I could swim across the pond and lend a hand! I am so inspired by your bravery and love for Saorise, you are so lucky to have each other. So much happening in such a small amount of time. I am sending all my healing thoughts to Saorise to get better and come home.

Oh Mogs, I'm just getting caught up. What a stressful place you've been in, for a while now. Saoirse totally loves you! She knows you're doing your absolute best for her. You are an amazing kitty advocate, educating yourself and staying involved in her care rather than blindly trusting her to vets who don't know her as well as you do. You're a superstar mamabean.

I'm glad you will be able to bring her home today. As Larry said, you can give Cerenia and Ondansetron together. I gave them to Marshmallow along with Pepcid at the same time. Did the vet mention a feeding tube to make it easier to get nutrition into her? I'm not sure if that's an option given everything that's going on. If not, hopefully the bupe regimen will keep her pain at a level where she can eat a bit.

Yes, one step at a time, one paw at a time. Hugs to you and please try to get in some rest when you can. Even if you can't sleep, maybe some meditation (next to Saoirse of course!) might help quiet your mind a bit. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Saoirse's home. :)

She has lost weight and she's buped up to the max but she's not stopped purring since she laid eyes on me when I went to collect her. Anti-jinx, she is starting to seem more herself. And she absolutely mullered her scratchy pole when I let her out to it a little while ago.

Saoirse's still having problems eating. :( She has been managing to eat at the vets with the collar on, though, so I've put out food in a bowl similarly shaped to the ones that they use. I managed to get Saoirse to eat 2 teaspoons of food with a small dose of ondansetron mixed through it. Even that was enough to make her grumble. :( She is hungry but I can't get her to eat much. I even tried removing her collar and holding the dish up to her. She ate a couple of mouthfuls but then she stopped again. I am praying very hard for her to get better as soon as possible. I'm very, very nervous about things right now. :nailbiting: And I'm trying very hard to pretend I'm not worried because I don't want Saoirse to pick up on my nervousness.

If the bupe is helping, then it's worth it even if it does make her a bit out of it. :) How wonderful that she's home - and happy and purring. I love it when they beat up the scratchy pole - I've always known when any of our cats is really on the mend because it's one of the things they only do when they're feeling good. :)

At least now you've got Saoirse home, you can help her to eat just a little bit every few hours. She clearly can't handle eating for more than a couple of minutes at a time, so small amounts frequently is probably going to be the way forward for now. But she IS hungry which is a good sign - as her mouth settles down I'm sure she'll start eating more at a time for you. :)

More hugs and prayers for both of you - I'm sure Saoirse really is on the mend now, but some extra healing thoughts never do any harm! :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Aww poor little girl :( I'm sure being home will help alot for her morale. Hope her mouth feels better soon, must not be fun for her to eat right now. I know everything right now is overwhelming but you are doing everything you can do, you are a very dedicated kitty mom. She could not be in better hands.

I think she might be constipated. She did have a pee earlier, but she keeps hopping in and out of the litter box every now and again. I just want my girl to be better ...

Saoirse's home
Music to my ears! :D You know Saoirse and can give her more coaxing, coddling and assist than the vet's office so I'm sure all will be fine and you'll be able to get her to take in a few more calories once she gets a little more settled. Sending healing thoughts and prayers for her continued improvement! And of course more hugs for you, her hero (and mine for how you care for her)! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yayyyyy... finally home and with some insulin on board, too! One step at a time... one paw at a time... you'll get there! Keeping those hugs, prayers, and scritches coming your way.

Yeah she's home!!!! :joyful::joyful::joyful:. Her mouth probably feels like when a child has their tonsils out. Will she lick and ice cube? It's cold and will give a bit of liquid to her. Hopefully it heals quickly. Hugs to your household. And I know you won't but try to rest some tonight.

My heartfelt thanks to every one of you for all your messages, and my profound gratitude for your continued prayers and healing thoughts ...

... I just got Saoirse to eat the best part of a pouch of food out of my hand! There is not one shred of doubt in my mind that the Universe is hearing you all and is moving to help my girl.

BG AMPS was over 18 (BBK 0.2) - Dose: 0.25IU Lantus.
+4 just over 11.
+12.5 10.9 (BBK 0.2)

(BG measured on Alphatrak.)

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

That's not nice. I had mine removed and the only thing I wanted to eat was ice cream. I don't know whether she'll go for the ice cube but I'll give it a try. Thanks for the idea. :bighug:

@tiffmaxee - UTI and inflammation at the surgery site (the latter has subsided with reinstatement of antibiotics). She has improved big time over where she was on Sunday (anti-jinx, anti-jinx).

@jayla-n-Drevon -

No plan. I asked the opthalmologist about it and she said it should take about 2-3 weeks for the swelling, bruising, etc. to heal. I'm assuming that that is the reckoning for a non-diabetic cat. I don't know how Saoirse's diabetes and the infection problems might affect her healing time. Our own main vet said to me on Tuesday that he couldn't see properly into her mouth to see how it was doing.

Saoirse just ate a little bit more for me not long ago. She's still having a bit of difficulty but she didn't growl this time.

slowly but surely :bighug:

You may already be doing this, but have you tried pureeing her food with water to make it soupy? She may not want to eat solid food because of the pain but would be willing to drink it.

Thank you for the food suggestions, Lisa. :) You're spot on that Saoirse has a harder time with the meaty 'flakes' as they come out of the pouch. I did try puréeing the food for her with a bit of added water to make it soupy but she didn't seem to like the taste of it. At the moment I'm blitzing the food up to a very finely minced consistency and mixing a little water and pumpkin through it (meds are constipating her). It's the best I've been able to come up with for her thus far.

Mogs, just catching up on all of this:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

so glad that she is home and seems to be happy at home. Sending vines and prayers that her mouth heals up soon and she can start to eat without discomfort, poor little baby.
Great news on the histology report for her eye, that must be such a relief.
Scritches for Saroise and Noodlebug:)

WTG Mogs! :bighug::bighug::bighug:You tell em! Glad that Saoirse is home now, you can maintain proper control. IV fluids are so important. I gave Dottie another hit of fluid today, and the transformation from listlessness to perkiness is astounding. She even found Gizmo's dish and ATE. Only a bite or two but she was willing.

I have suddenly realized that she must be nauseated, because she does that yawning, too. I had thought it was from the surgery, but now I see that, thanks to your post, it may be something different. She's recieving Clamavox, and I'm giving her yogurt. Can you give Saoirse yogurt? Plain, no flavoring or sugar. It would be the most natural way to replace some of the probiotics she will be needing. Best of all, Dottie likes it. See if Saoirse likes yogurt, it may get her going on eating again!

Yay Saoirse! Welcome home sweet girl!!!!

I'm so glad to hear she's letting you feed her Mogs. Just more proof how much she loves you...she knows you want her to eat, so she is.

Don't worry about repying to us all. We'd rather you spend your time with Saoirse! :bighug:

I'm so happy that Saoirse is home with her beloved Mama, and is trying to eat. Your love is some of the best medicine, Mogs, nobody knows her as well, or can care for her as much, as you can! Both of you have had such a hard time of it, I'm praying hard that everything will continue to look up now. (((Hugs))) for ALL of you, gentle scritches, too, and all kinds of good healing vines being sent your way!

Lucy :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

So happy to hear her eating has gotten a bit better. With all that has gone on, you could have earned a degree I veterinary medicine. Your approach would be very compassionate to pet and parent.

I'm so happy to read the latest - she is home, purring, scratching and eating some. And I'm sure you feel better, too! Not only have you gotten some rest, but your baby is home!

Didn't last. Saoirse's nausea got worse this morning and I couldn't keep her eating and therefore properly hydrated. She started getting lethargic and cranky again so the vets have taken her in again for overnight IV fluids. I don't want this to be happening. I wish I wasn't so exhausted so that I could help Saoirse more. I'm praying so hard that she'll be able to get the collar off soon so I can get her eating reliably. My baby ... :(

Have you asked youy vet about teaching you how to give her the IV fluids at home? Many of us, especially with CRF kitties, give our cats fluids at home.

So sorry to hear of your continued troubles, Mogs... I'm sure the vets are well used to this and will be in control soon. I understand your frustration and anxiety only too well but you must use this time to recharge yourself as best as you are able. These complex scenarios do take a while to settle, much as we'd all love to have a magic wand and make things better straightaway...

This is the problem, Diana. The vets (both referral hospital and local) are so concerned about Saoirse's stress that they keep sending her home when she's still not stable. I think the UTI is still on the go and that's not helping. I know the horse has bolted but I wish they had kept her on antibiotics longer. :(

They have not offered it as a treatment avenue. (BTW, Saoirse is early stage II.) Being honest, Lisa, I'm already completely out of my depth and struggling. I don't think I'm in a fit state to take anything else on board right now. :(

Hmmmm... is there a senior vet at the practice who you could ask to get involved, if not already? Sorry, I don't know of course what kind of practice this is. The ones I have experience of seem to have a couple of senior partners for complicated or complex cases and then several more junior vets for the run of the mill stuff (as we know, most vets don't know much about FD but are expected to deal with it, and no doubt the same goes for infections of different kinds. Not saying at all that the vets looking after Saiorse aren't doing a reasonable job, but if they're quite young and inexperienced they may need some back-up.

FWIW and IMveryHO, I think you're right to be wary of giving fluids at home - NOT because you're not up to it but yes, you've been struggling with your own health and don't need new and additional pressures... We caregivers always put ourselves last but there comes a point at which you have to speak sternly to yourself and cut yourself some slack...

((((Mogs)))) our internet has been up and down all day and I'm only just seeing your update now. I'm so sorry Saoirse still isn't feeling well enough for you to keep her at home, though I'm sure she enjoyed her overnight back with you just the same. I really hope the vet gets her sorted out this time so that when she comes home again you don't have to go through any more of this.

I agree that learning to give IV fluids at home is not easy - I don't think I'd want to attempt it with any of our cats here. We give sub-q, but if she needs the fluids to be given IV, I'm not sure that many vets would even allow you to do that at home. And yes, it's too much for you to take on right now even if they did agree that sub-q would be sufficient - you've been through way too much recently without feeling you have to learn something new right now as well. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Mogs, no one could possibly go through this and not be exhausted so give yourself a break. Don't take on anything you are not comfortable being able to deal with. Do what is best for both of you.

Saoirse has shown she is a very strong little girl and while there have been some bumps in the road and they haven't totally smoothed out yet, they will pass and you will start getting back to a more normal state of affairs soon. I know it's so hard to see our little ones not feeling well but you really need to look after yourself too and the vets will look after Saoirse. Sending a truckload of healing vines and prayers to you and Saoirse.

The poor cat sure has gone through a lot. If I read your profile correctly, it looks like she is almost 16 years old?

(((Mogs))) I slept all day and just saw your updated title....not again!

I have to go back and read everything but I wanted to get the extra healing energy flowing first!

Hugs & prayers :bighug::bighug:

eta: hopefully some more fluids will get her feeling well again. I was a bit surprised when they left the IV out yesterday. someone at the practice needs to realize that stability might trump stress right now

Kiefer is a very good source of probiotics.... in the yogurt section.

agreed--SQ is great at home but IV at the vet--it would be way to challenging to do this without the help of a skilled vet tech or vet--

Don't do this to me, Linda. I am not being cruel to my cat.

In all honesty I feel very hurt and upset that you wrote the above. I would hope that you might know my mind and nature much better than that by now. Saoirse is actually doing much better than I am at the moment. She was in absolutely flying form last night. This is not a cat on her way out. The biggest problem I am having at the moment is, like many other caregivers whom I've seen post here since I joined, that the vets keep releasing her too early. It doesn't help that, despite my providing them with everything she needs to help her they have been ignoring me and doing things like not putting her phosphorus binder into her food. (Did it myself tonight for the food I dropped in for them to give her.)
