Raw poultry necks for dental health

My 7 month old civie has mild gingivitis despite having his teeth brushed :? The vet has him on a course of clindamycin right now. If that doesn't work, he'll prescribe flagyl. The vet feels that civie is too young for a dental but wants to be kept updated on the gingivitis so he can consult with the dental vets for further treatment.

I'm thinking of adding raw poultry necks to civie's dental hygiene regime. He eats raw food anyways so he'll take to the necks right away. How often do you give a raw neck? How long can the neck stay out at room temperature before it needs to be thrown away? And how do you keep a cat from dragging it around the house? I know civie will do that and probably even play with it

I remember Dr Lisa recommending organic chicken necks for a particular reason that escapes me. Mine would never go for it so it never became an issue. As to how long to leave out? Depends on your household, ie whether you have kids or not as the risk for salmonella would increase the longer the necks stay out.

oh god, the thought of that just made me ummm, almost bring my breakfast back.
tom eats raw rabbit in the form of hamburger patties. he is in desperate need of mouth and teeth cleaning and i guess i could try a eeewwhhh, neck. do you just ask the butcher or what? is a neck considered a meal?
honestly i don't know if i could stand seeing it there.

I have no experience with raw chicken necks. However, I have never heard of flagyl (metronitizole) for dental issues.

I thought Flagyl was more for belly issues, Tucker always got it when his CP flared and his belly got upset. I haven't seen it used for dental issues either.

Regarding the necks, I think Dr. H once said she dumped a few in the bathtub and let the cats eat them there so they didn't mess up the house.

I remember that WCF used to give Meowzi chicken hearts as a treat. Maybe one a day of those would do it?

I am another one who has never heard of using flagyl for dental issues.

My vet has recommended this product. My cats won't touch it, and it is a disconcerting color, but you could look at the site.

fwiw, i toss down a neck or leg from time to time for my kids. i tried putting it on a plate but reality is, like you say, it's not going to stay there. and sure enough, it didn't. mine don't drag them around the house, just a few feet is all. i have all tile downstairs so i just let them do their thing then i scrub the floor there.

and for that matter, when i give them necks or legs, i just leave them down for maybe half an hour at the most. by then everyone seems to have lost interest in them anyway so i scoop them up and toss them.

also, chicken gizzards are a bit grissly too so you can use them too for dental health. i buy a package of them and cut them up a little and feed them as treats actually. my kids love them.

Second the chicken gizzards! I get the organic raw ones that are sort of already cut up. Really cheap for a whole lot of them. My son's two year old loves them. He just gnaws away. If they are cut too small he just swallows them whole. Even though Tigger eats raw food I can't get him to eat the gizzards. Maybe at his age they are too hard to chew.

I'll try necks and gizzards  Civie like to carry stuff around so I'll probably have to keep him in the bathroom while he gnaws on the raw stuff.

Any opinon on supermarket poultry necks and gizzards vs the ones sold in pet stores? Is organic best? The Asian supermarkets sell poultry necks and gizzards for really cheap but they're not organic.

And yes, vet did say flagyl. If that doesn't help the gingivtis either, he'll try another antibiotic.

in all honesty, i just buy the stuff at my supermarket and take it home and wash it real good and i've never had a problem. gizzards & hearts are actually hard for me to find year round so during the holidays when all the stores have lots of them, i buy a couple dozen packages and freeze them. just thaw out a pack now and then. :-)

fwiw, my first thought when it comes to flagyl too is as an anti-diarheal medicine but it actually is an antibiotic so i just did a quick google and did come up with some info about it being used for dental issues

(typed this hours ago and got pulled away with it just sitting here on my screen so apologize if it's duplicate info :-) )
