As day 14 comes to an end and the second blood test of the day is done, Dusty's done it, he's OTJ! dancing_cat
Thanks everyone for the amazing advise, we pray all kitties live a long and happy life. With owners like you all, they can't ask for anything more!

Congratulations! So glad to see you made it...I am still on the lookout with Bubbles...her new trick is to try to get into the dog food bin...in search of carbs, I guess...UGH...NO MORE DRY FOOD, EVER!! Stay  and otj_icon

Thanks Greenea! I still have two bags of dry food in the pantry that I need to get rid of! My other cat Beni is known to open doors, surprised he hasn't gotten in there

He sure did, he was like I want none of this insulin business! Actually I have to break him from the morning blood test routine, he comes and wakes me early in the morning for his blood test. I have a hardly used vile of insulin and like 30 syringes, what should I do with them? Hold on to them in case I need it again, donate.... ???

I have seen people suggest you keep insulin in the fridge even when your moggy is OTJ, that way if there's a slip-up you can begin treatment immediately, rather than chasing after vets and prescriptions.

Hopefully he'll learn to appreciate the lie-ins soon enough

Dusty with insulin is done,
the OTJ party time has come!
Let's all celebrate,
and today Dusty gets to emigrate,
to the Falls, the wonderful falls,
where the tales that are told are all talls!

Congratulations on your OTJ status Dusty!

Dusty, king of the falls, just lazing around.

Thanks again everyone! Last night Dusty was celebrating running around the house chasing his brother Beni and this morning he was like, what, no testing this morning!? I kinda had to pretend to test him  I'll keep testing him minimum once a week.

  CONGRATULATIONS

Tips to stay OTJ

We say a cat is in remission if the cat can maintain BG levels for 14 days between 40-120 with most of that spent under 100. However, please keep in mind that once a diabetic always a diabetic.

1. Never feed dry - not even treats. If you change wet food types, be 100% sure the new food is also low carb and same low carb % as your current food. Some cats are very carb sensitive and an increase from 3-6% to 8-10% can spike the BG’s. Don’t feed if you aren’t sure!
2. Weigh every 2 weeks to 1 month to watch for weight changes. Too much of a weight gain can cause loss of remission.
3. Measure blood once a week, indefinitely. You want to catch a relapse quickly.
4. No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check.
5. Monitor food intake, peeing and drinking. If increasing, a sign of losing remission.
6. Regular vet checks for infection such as dental , ear or UTI. And get them treated quick!

If he does fall out of remission you need to be more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any.

Thx Wendy&Tiggy, my biggest concern will be controlling his weight, he loves to eat! By feeding him wet food at least I get to control how much and when he eats. I just hope I'm not under feeding them. They were grazers and that's what got Dusty in trouble, all 19lbs of him. I'm keeping him between 11 and 12 lbs.

Most male cats should weigh around 11-12 pounds, so it sounds like Dusty is just about right. Of course, ECID so some cats like Bengals or Maine coons will be bigger and weigh more.

My civie Monet got up to 16 1/2 pounds a couple of years ago, way too much for him. Took him back down to around 12 pounds now and he is much more active and healthier. He only gets canned food, needing about 7-8 ounces a day to maintain his weight. Dusty may need more or less, it all depends on how he does on the different canned foods available.

The great thing about the wet food is it fills them up better and it's easy to portion control. Lot's of flavors to tempt them too.

Here is a nice Body Condition Score chart, to help you assess Dusty's weight.

Meal feeding works better for me, and helps to keep them satisfied with their food intake spread out during the day. I also add a tablespoon of water to each portion of food. Helps to give them a fuller feeling, and flushes out toxins through the kidneys. I weigh Monet at least once a week, at the same time of day, and adjust the food portions as needed. He's been needing a bit more food this fall, maybe because of the cooler weather, don't really know, but closer to 8 ounces is working better for him right now.

Your mileage may vary. ;-)

Nicksmom, so you feed you kitty raw chicken gizzards? No need to cook or anything, just give it to him like that?

Hello there, Dusty!

It's me, Cupcake  My stupid human-being is running around with all those stupid syringes and glucometers in her hands, so I've found a minute to write and greet you! I'm happy to see you OTJ and you know... I think I'll try to cope with my BG myself because my crazy Ruta (yes, I love her, but she got mad about my diabetes) is so tired and I'm sooo sick and tired of all those testings, injections too! Moreover, she is afraid of stopping to give me those stupid injections! Can you believe that?! I do hope she will not give me a shot tonight!

Need to run, she is coming! ohmygod_smile

Regards,
purrrrrrring Cupcake

Cupcake, your numbers look amazing! Tell your mom not to worry, I think you'll be in a position to do a OTJ trial very soon. I can't give you advise on dosing but it'll all become clear to you very soon. Your doses will get smaller and smaller to point that you need to stop and give your pancreas a chance to work on its own. You're almost there, there's a light at the end of the tunnel!

Oh, dear Dusty, I do hope she has some brain and knows how to use it! I do not need any shots tonight! She is waiting oddly looking at me
And I do hope she'll continue to give me those tasty treats with no reason at all. You know what I mean. We cats make them think we are the most amazing pets in the world! Because we certainly are cat_pet_icon
Keep your paws crossed and let's keep in cat-to-cat touch dancing_cat
