IBS & Royal Canin Selected Protein - can I switch off?

Lucy recently had a bout of pancreatitis, which was caught early and treated successfully. The vet said she has IBS, which is likely causing most of her recent issues. They put her on the canned Royal Canin Selected Protein PV (venison). She's been on it for a few weeks now and the itchiness/scabs she had on the back of her ears from what we are guessing is a food allergy is gone, she seems to feel much better and is less bloated.

My concern with this stuff is of course that it is very high carb. The vet told me to keep her on it for another two months, and that other venison foods are out right now because they are not as 'tightly controlled' as the PV. My question is if that is really necessary, or if she can be switched over to a food with venison as a protein only (such as Ziwipeak or Lotus, two I've been able to find that don't include other types of meats). I am worried about causing an IBS flare-up by switching her over and if she just needs to stay on the Royal Canin, but this is unfamiliar territory for me with her (IBS).

Hi there,

I'm new and my cat is also IBD and pancreatitis. He has been able to get off steroids with a hydrolyzed protein diet (high carb) so I'm in the same boat as you. As to commercial limited ingredient diets, your vet is right that they are not as tightly controlled as the Rx diets, and that the food may be contaminated with other ingredients not on the label. Some people probably have success with them anyway.

Please note that food sensitive cats can have a reaction to food transitions regardless of what the food is. I'm going to give my cat a tiny bit of new food and see what happens in 48 hours before increasing it. FYI I just ordered and received the Young Again LID Zero Mature food, which you will find easily if you google it. It's hydrolyzed pork as the only protein, so shouldn't cause protein issues because it's hydrolyzed. It's also very low carb. I can't vouch for it yet, but I'm crossing my fingers. It's not prescription, so I'm a little nervous about quality control, but I don't know what else to do. If I were you I would try to find a specifically limited ingredient wet venison diet and introduce a tiny bit and wait. Or try the Young Again. Good luck!

I use Instinct, Hound & Gatos, and Lotus LID rabbit for my cat Emily, but she doesn't have skin allergy issues--just digestive ones, so it's not quite the same level of sensitivity.

Any inflammation is going to impact blood glucose, so even if the food is higher carb than ideal, it may be worth it for the inflammation control it's doing.

So my civvie also has IBD and as a former mom of a diabetic cat I refused to give her the dry hydrolyzed protein food due to the carb content. So the vet agreed to try the RC select protein food, and she did well. I give her duck because it’s less carbs that the venison, but rabbit is the lowest just FYI. But I feel too sad giving her rabbit, so I decided to stick with duck. She’s also on a low dose of prednisone and pretty overweight even tho I only give bee 1/3 can twice a day... but so far her sugar has been normal thank goodness. So just throwing it out there that you may wanna try changing the protein source of the RC food for a lower carb content.
