Help with Dosing (Partial Continuation)

Something wacky has happened to your spreadsheet. Or is it just what I am seeing?

New dose for tomorrow will be 2 units.
It was indeed on my end. I have no clue what happened, but it should be somewhat fixed, aka readable. It should read 70; 71 @ +3.50. My google sheets is giving me a hard time with stacking my numbers lol!

His nighttime cycles have been just beautiful last night and tonight so far. This gives me a lot of hope for Jojo. I’m very optimistic.

I'll let you be for tonight, and if anything comes up I'll post a new forum so this one doesn't get too much longer. Thank you for your help, and I'll make sure he gets 2u tomorrow morning!

Looking atJojo’s SS today. Super awesome numbers!

What did he eat and when did he eat it? What was the timing of his food

I still think he needs a few more carbs front loaded in the cycle.

He ate his usual Friskies Shreds mixed with some Pate this morning. He got it at 6:30 AM, but didn't eat it all like usual. He got the leftover breakfast for his snacks at +2 and +4. I did add a little less shreds and replaced that with some pate as I'm trying to slowly switch him over.

Well, you are doing a great job. I know we’ve actually been trying to get rid of the shreds! I don’t mean to be confusing. I have actually been trying to find some different foods with some 7-9 percent carbs but nothing as high as the shreds.

I understand what you mean! Shreds do have a good bit of carbs, and that's why I'd like to try and slowly transition him to pate. I'm starting to learn Jojo may be a little less picky about the texture of pate, and more so dislike pate that isn't salmon or chicken flavor. It will be a slow process, so thankfully there is some time to try and find foods with the 7-9 range for carbs.

I'm thinking for this PM shot of lowering his dose to 1.75u, but I wanted to ask if you thought that'd be a smart idea. I'll also make sure to look at that article you sent!

I was just looking at his spreadsheet again before I came to your thread. Even though the greens today are all normal healthy greens, I say we should go ahead and do the reduction down to 1.75 units and see how it goes. He keeps earning back to back reductions, and I would like to see how far we can go with the reductions before he levels off on a dose…. or if we will need to change the reduction point to keep him in those healthy greens as much as possible. Also, you will have more time to complete the food transition. Jojo has a mind of his own and wants to be at a lower dose! 😻. Go Jojo! I’m really happy with his progress and I know you are too!

How is he now? You said he was sluggish this morning?

I'm surprised how quickly he's gone down with his doses. It's hard to believe he was even at 3u! It's so rewarding being able to see the numbers go down and him become stable.

He is still sluggish, but not as bad. He has been napping most of the day, which isn't too unusual, but there's minor behavior differences, such as him not wanting to lay on his blanket or on my mom, his favorite nap partner lol! He just seems tired, y'know?

I don’t like that…. that has me a little bit worried that there could be something else going on. You know how cats are… they hide illnesses and sometimes there are only subtle signs like them not sleeping in their normal spot. Having said that, sometimes with the change of seasons, they will change things a little bit too. I hope he’s going to perk up soon. Have you tested him for ketones which, honestly, I would be very surprised to see with all of these good numbers, but you never know…. because if he did have something else going on like an infection or inflammation of some sort, then perhaps he could still produce ketones.

Another thing it could be is just that he’s really not accustomed to spending a lot of time in the lower, normal healthy blood glucose numbers. Some cats will even hide or act strangely when they’re not used to it — and they will be very active when they’re hopped up on the sugar again!

Yes, I am worried too. I actually haven't tested ketones before, nor do I have a meter to test. I did just order one and I'll get it in about 3 hours. Even if he doesn't have a concerning amount of ketones, or any, it's still a good thing to have on hand. I'm pretty sure he has a bad infection in his teeth too, so I'd rather play it safe.

I am hoping he's just getting used to being in the lower ranges. He was alright last night, and was playing and behaving normally; although more energetic than usual, this early morning, but seemed to get sluggish around +2. He could've also just wore himself out. A lot of possibilities, but no harm in testing for ketones and monitoring!

I’m glad you’re getting that ketone meter. I did remember that your signature said he had tooth resorption — and that can get infected and you wouldn’t want that because it could become a problem in a diabetic cat. Many vets will say that they want you to get the diabetes regulated before they do a dental procedure, but that is not always the wisest choice. Your Jojo is doing so well now that it probably would be possible to do a dental cleaning and tooth extraction if required.

Thankfully, Jojo is getting his teeth done on the 21st. He will for sure be getting one tooth taken out, possibly more. I hope he feels up to eating after getting his teeth done, but I wouldn't be surprised if he just wants to sleep for a while. It's more likely he'll be getting 2-3 teeth taken out.

Oh good. I am glad he’s scheduled for the dental. My cats usually want to eat when they get home — even after extractions. One poor boy this year didn’t. He had bleeding from his mouth and he wasn’t eating at all. By the next day he was lots better.

I forgot to ask if his diarrhea.soft stool is better?

One thought I had was that it could be the Friskies. Friskies foods are very high in organ meats and I have repeatedly found them — over many years of feeding it to rescue cats and kittens— to cause diarrhea. It’s a shame because it’s an economical food. I have had cats who just had lots of diarrhea on Friskies, and we have been at our wits end — trying Metronidazole and probiotics, pro-pectalin, deworming, etc. etc. Many times, just changing the cat’s/kitten’s food away from Friskies to another food has simply stopped the diarrhea.

I have noticed it is getting better. I decided to experiment and got him two different flavors to try, plain salmon and plain chicken. He still has soft stool, but he's having an easier time cleaning himself, not trying to scoot his butt, and I don't need to wipe him nearly as often. He also doesn't smell nearly as bad as before, but that may be because he's actually able to clean himself.
