Constipation! Update....

So....currently Mouse is at the vet getting enemas. She has a large, hard chunk of poop right between her pelvis. She said once they break that out of there, the rest will come out with miralax. She prefers miralax to lactulose. She says it works much better. She suspects the antibiotic is contributing to Mouse not wanting to eat along with the constipation. Not sure what she will be on....or maybe she'll stay on it. I'll have to ask again. So....sounds good....I just hope they can break out that poop!

Oh I hope so too. That sounds painful. A lot of pressure can build up behind it. I just hope there's not too much behind it since she hasn't been eating. So hopefully no nerve damage or other damage to the colon. I'm optimistic. Miralax has been hit and miss for me. It works for some of my cats and doesn't work for others. Every cat is different and I have a large population to experiment on! You just need to find out what will work for Mouse. I would also consider a new food or at least adding fiber into her diet for maintenance (like freeze dried pumpkin or psyllium husks - as long as she will eat with that in there.) Paws crossed for little Mouse.

Yeah....I just switched her to Kahluas food last month. She did great on her old food, but it has loads of carbs.

So glad she is being treated! Hope it works! :bighug:

I would say after having tried Miralax with Ruby and finding that it didn’t work that you should experiment to see if either Miralax or Lactulose works for Mouse once they are able to remove the poop. Every cat is different. I would also stock up on pet-enemas you can administer at home and keep track of her poop activity if you can. I note on Ruby’s SS when she poops and start to worry when 5-6 days have gone by. Ruby is on raw food though and cats eating raw poop less often.

I would check with the people on the feline megacolon group about food. Like I said earlier, they are big on those two Royal Canin foods. I personally would not feed dry food (as a regular or solo diet) to a cat with constipation problems (or really any cat, as dry food is just not hydrating enough for them and they don't usually make up for it by taking in adequate water).

I dont know how to show a photo!
The only way I think I've ever done it was to save photos to my desktop (desktop computer) and then drag them into a message. I never had luck using my phone to get a photo in here but I believe there is a way to do it (I wish I knew since most of my cat photos are on my phone... more cats than people on there!)

Me, too! My babies!

If you have an Android, can't do it. I believe iPhones you can copy/paste from your Photos app? Maybe tap and hold the picture down, and see if copy pops up. Or it's an option somewhere...I haven't used an iPhone for a few years. It's why I usually just put.pics in my SS

Edit: or you could put in Google drive or something like that, and put sharing settings so anyone with link can view, and paste link here

So. How is Mouse tonight? At home with you?
She is home. They said they gave her 3 enemas and fluids and they got some small poops and runny poop. The big one has not come yet. I hope it comes soon. She is very crabby. I gave her the antibiotic and nearly lost my hand. The miralax is next.....I am afraid......

I am concerned about that big one. And she is a small cat. I hope it’s not too large to pass for her. I wonder if some Cisapride might help move it along? How much Miralax did the new vet recommend?

Well, another enima in the books. No poop yet, but the vet felt around and said things are getting softer in there, so hopefully soon! Herself is eating and is the proud owner of 3 fuzzy mice. A girl needs her toys!

I hope she's doing okay psychologically. These repeat enemas can really take their toll on a kitty. They can take a while to recuperate from all that.
I sure hope the vet is right about it getting softer in there! Oh PLEASE let it pass through.

poor mouse, i will be praying for her to get that passed!
just fyi: with Ares, he was having problems. but after he finally started getting the super hard balls out, (went thru slippery elm, docusate, mineral oil, pumpkin) what is working to keep him regular is 3-4 sprinkles of Psyllium Husk over food...very fine sprinkle 3-4x per day has kept him pooping and they are now softer and seeming to be almost regular. He is real picky about whats in his food and he got over this very quickly now has NO problems eating it. its very faint smell.
If you want i can send you some of mine since your going for broke!
i have so much (we were on keto diet a while ago) so a huge bag of it.
only for after the large hard ball gets out tho, cuz this can just cake a large stuck ball up even more.
PM me if you are interested.

Thank you! Let me see what I can find when I finally leave home!

Please start a new thread. We try to keep threads to no more than 50 posts since it's very hard to backtrack or read through to get a full picture when there are almost 200 posts in a thread.

Thanks!
