Constipation! Update....

Maria, I have to go to bed now. I hope you can convince your husband to take Mouse to the vet in the morning. This seems like a dire situation. I will check in on you tomorrow. Until then, try to make her as comfortable as possible with some massage and gentle pets. Big hugs. :bighug::bighug:

We have a 1 inch square poop. It is a rock. I'm gonna give her more enema in a bit.
Hey that's something!

In the meantime I would increase lactulose dose. I see you can also add lactulose to the enema...but if you have you have mineral oil I think I'd try that to help lubricate. Sounds like whatever she has in there is just too hard to absorb much water

I wish I had mineral oil. We did it a second time and got a super tiny piece out. Should i go buy some?

Oh, I gave her 2 ml of lactulose. I read that it's usually 1 ml for 2 lbs. She's 5.7 lbs.

Ok. I too have to get to bed, good luck. You're a good cat mama, hopefully in a few hours the worst of it is over and you gets lots of poop :bighug:

I am flying by the seat of my pants (Google) here and found this:
Moderate constipation or obstipation will require larger volume enemas which are given slowly using a red rubber catheter (usually 10-12 French). Enemas given too rapidly may induce vomiting. Water or isotonic saline solutions at 5-10ml/kg are given. Safe additions to this are mineral oil (5-10ml/cat), DSS (5-10mls/cat), or lactulose (5-10ml/cat). Do not use DSS and mineral oil together in the same enema, DSS will promote mucosal absorption of the mineral oil.

DSS being dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, like Colace. Which I don't think you're using at all

The vet taught us to use a large syringe, some vaseline, and warm soapy water. You mix a little dawn dish soap with some warm water, suck it into the syringe, rub vaseline over the tip of the syringe, then insert the tip at an upward angle into the rectum. You might need someone to help hold the cat, because until a cat gets used to it, it can be quite shocking for them. Slowly administer the water. I believe we used to do 30ccs. Wait about an hour, then give another one if needed.

I've done warm water twice and now mineral oil. I don't think I got much if any mineral oil into her. Did I read somewhere that Docusol kids was okay? I have some of that....

I have no experience giving a mineral enema to a cat (horses, yes. Cats, no). I'm sorry, I'm not sure what a Docusol one is. The warm soapy water usually worked for us.

Docusol is a pediatric enima. I haven't used it because I'm not sure it's safe. I'm so worried and shocked that we are in this place. Still no poop. She did pee awhile ago. She hasn't peed in a long time. No eating...bathing though.

Did you get/try the anti-nausea meds. My recommendation would be Zofran orally dissolving tablets ( eed Rx and go to human pharmacy.).
Lactulose added to the enema can be very effective. 5-10 mL per cat. I have had this done at the vet.

I t sounds like she may need to be deobstipated. I am so sorry this is happening!

What’s going on with Mouse this morning? I am super worried
Well, I have given her 3 mineral oil enemas since last night. Still no poop. She did bathe and crawl into bed with me. She ate about 1 TB of food this a.m. My husband does not want her at the vet she's been seeing. I have a call into another vet whom we kind of know thru school. Hopefully she will have suggestions or an appt.

We didn't get antinausea meds. It was an $80 shot. At the time, she was eating a bit. I assumed with all the enemas and fluids she'd poop and eat more. I regret that choice now. Nothing has worked. And the vet initially said she wasn't that bad. Just a bit backed up.

How do you add lactulose to the enema? Water mixed with it? I have the type of lactulose that's like honey. How much of each?

That shot will only be good for 24 hours. So sorry. It was probably a Cerenia injection. That’s expensive. I think I pay $50 but it varies a lot depending on where you live, I know.

I never did a home enema. Depending on the location of the blockage it may not be possible because they may need to use the red rubber tube to get up higher.
So I am sorry that I don’t know all the details about adding the Lactulose to the enema. It would be mixed with water though, I am sure. Yes Lactulose is sticky.

She has an appt. this afternoon with the new vet. I hope she can help us.....

The people in the Feline Megacolon Facebook group swear by the Royal Canin Fiber Response food. I believe also the Royal Canin GI canned food. I am not one to always take the vet’s recommendation about the Rx diets, but in this case, since she’s very constipated, I would try a food like this after you get her bowels opened up.

I am praying for your little girl.

Hi there, I am new here and can only offer my moral support and sympathy for your situation. Glad you found a vet to check her out, and consider yourself lucky you did. In my area vets are overwhelmed and our only emergency vet hospital just announced as of Monday, they will no longer be 24/7. Which will mean driving an hour or two if a pet emergency occurs during overnight periods.

I am also glad you convinced your husband to pay for another appointment, that might be the real miracle here. Good luck with Mouse, she is in my thoughts.

Yes.....it is hard to find an available vet. That's how we ended up at the other place. I'm not sure my husband is okay with this. Resigned, I guess. I'll get a job if I have to. I've done that before. I love my girl!
