I’m glad she’s eaten 4 tsp of food. That’s good. Poor little girl. Keep up the Lactulose and it’s a very safe med in cats so you can give more. I will be thinking of you! Keep us updated. I will check in on y’all again in the morning. I’m sorry your daughter is sick as well. I hope she will be all better very soon! You’ve had a really rough day. Hugs! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you! Luckily it's just a cold. Mouse loves her fishy food, so hopefully she will keep eating this stuff. She's angry at me right now for that Lactulose!

Hopefully when she starts eating again she will be fine eating it mixed in food. Most cats like the taste. I had mine compounded into chicken flavor. Maybe Mouse would like fish flavored Lactulose!

Well, Mouse had a peaceful night. She slept with me all night. She is trying to poop, but only liquid comes out. She won't eat this morning, but hacked up a hairball. Lots of growling when I gave her the Lactulose. Back to the vet after I drop the kiddo off at school, I guess.

We have some poop! It's small, but a bit more than a couple nights ago when this started. The urine results show a UTI. Everything else is normal. So.....she goes in this morning for a Covenia shot, more fluids and maybe another enema. Does this sound good??? She is still pretty quiet, but did stretch and let me pet her.

Convenia is not the best antibiotic for a UTI. There are oral ones that are better. Zeniquin is good and is a once a day pill that’s not too big.

That was my thought, too. I'm also going to ask for some anti nausea meds. She is hungry, but just smacks her lips and walks away.
It’s that constipation causing it. Sounds like you may be making progress but another enema is a good idea. She has hard stool blocking things and only the liquid behind it is getting around the hard stool.

So does she not need anti nausea meds? I don't want to give her what she doesn't need.

I am definitely not a fan of Convenia because there are way too many downsides associated with it. Some vets use it for everything  Number one reason I won’t allow it in my cats is the risk of hemolytic anemia. Also if your cat has a negative reaction to it there’s no way to get it out of the cat’s body. Some cats require hospitalization and supportive care to get through it. Having said that, I have had a kitty who received a Convenia injection and she was okay. The vet did it without my permission. I was ticked off! But that’s COVID veterinary medicine for you… I wasn’t allowed inside and the vet drained a massive abscess from this kitty and gave her the Convenia injection. At least that was more appropriate to the situation since Convenia is designed to treat skin infections - but I was still mad and will never take my cats back there anymore because this guy tries to give Convenia for everything- even flea allergy dermatitis!

I have also had to use it in feral cats before, but in that case pilling was not an option.

She may benefit from them in the short term. You should get some to keep on hand. It’s just that I think it will get better on her own when she’s unblocked. But yes, it could make her more comfortable in the short term and that’s what you want for poor sweet Mouse!

Got it! I will call and ask for something else. Thank you!

I love the name Mouse. I had a foster kitten last year and his name was Mouse. He was black and white and had the shape of Mickey Mouse ears on his back. He was a great cat! I miss him. I hope your little girl Mouse is going to be all better soon.

Awwww.....that's sweet! Our Mouse we found on a country road one night. She was less then 1/2 a pound. My husband named her Mouse because she was so tiny. She's still tiny....generally topping out at 6.7 lbs. But she's mighty!

Tiny but mighty! I like that. I have a cat named Tinkerbelle. She’s one and a half years old but only weighs about 4.5 lbs. She’s basically a miniature cat. I don’t know why. Her litter mates all grew to normal size. She definitely has a big personality though.

Oh my! That's itty bitty! My oldest daughter has spina bifida and is only 4'6".....she, too, is tiny but mighty. It goes along with their sizes.

For crying out loud with these diets! Is she prone to UTI?
Yeah, she is. She's had issues all her life off and on. I give her d mannose daily, but I guess that doesn't work. I try to do everything I can to prevent illness, but......I guess it's time to dive into homemade food.

but......I guess it's time to dive into homemade food.
Good for you. You are taking an intelligent approach about the food. I am also very proud of you for sticking to your guns and getting Veraflox instead of the Convenia injection. I really respect that.

Now… any more poop? Did they say that she passed any more stool at the vet? Or any since she came home?

on. I give her d mannose daily, but I guess that doesn't work.
D-mannose is only effective against E. coli bacteria so she must be growing something else in there. It’s great that you have been trying the D-mannose though. Did she want to do a culture and antibiotic sensitivity test on the urine to make sure it’s the best antibiotic for the job?

The homemade food really isn't that bad/hard. When I was doing it, I just set aside a dedicated time to make a batch when counters, etc are all clean, easy to sanitize everything afterwards. Really not all that different than making chicken or something for dinner, just a bit more cutting/grinding

Thanks....no more poop. None at the vet. She's trying to go, but mostly just laying by the heat duct.

I did at one point years ago, make the food for them. They wouldn't touch raw, so I cooked it. But, then kids came and I just ran out of time. I'm willing to try again.

She did...I'm holding off though because this has already cost over $800! She did the sensitivity already so veralox should do it.

I'm worried....not eating or anything. She's just laying there...what do I do????

Constipation, if it goes on for any length of time can lead to obstipation (unable to pass stool) and megacolon (colon loses motility and enlarges).

Constipation in a cat, like a human, is very painful.

It may take multiple enemas and/or manual extraction. Can you go back to the vet?

I doubt it. My husband is furious. This has cost close to $1,000 so far. I don't know what to do.

From the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine:

https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departm...information/feline-health-topics/constipation

"Severe, non-responsive cases of constipation may progress to megacolon and obstipation (a condition characterized by permanent loss of function of affected colon). In these cases, surgical resection of the affected portions of colon may be necessary to prevent translocation of bacteria from the GI tract to the bloodstream, which can be life-threatening."

Can you increase Lactulose dose? Not sure what you're at and what's max for her size.

I consider not eating secondary to constipation...can only put so much in if nothing is going out

I could increase it....she's at 1 ml every 8 hours. She's 5.7 lbs. I do have fleet glycerin enemas... they are 7.5 ml. I'm freaking out here.

An emergency vet will be very expensive but I worry...Can you bring her to the vet in the morning? Perhaps they can give her another enema there and then you can buy more pet friendly ones to give her at home? I see they sell them at Walmart too: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pet-Ema-for-Dogs-Cats-12-ml/48261936
I could go in the morning but what will they do? Shes had 2 enemas already. She's taking Lactulose. I'm worried sick. But my husband is furious already. He's a hard no. If I could go pick these up at Walmart now.....but only shipping....is there anything else I can do here at home???????

Here are some ideas: massaging her lower abdomen, rubbing her bum with a warm wash cloth, figure out a way of administering a warm water enema on your own? I quickly found this that might be helpful. You may be able to get the tube in a pharmacy? https://www.wikihow.com/Give-a-Cat-an-Enema-at-Home

I was just watching this. I have empty enema bottles. I washed them. Could I use those? They are 133 ml each and the tips are maybe 2 inches long. What would I put in them?

With cat constipation, you might see the cat straining and passing some very liquidy poop. This does not mean that the constipation has ended. It means that the colon has released some fluid because it has become irritated by the constipation. The constipated poop is still inside.

Yes...I know...all that comes out when she strains is what appears to be pee.
