I am concerned about Phoenix's insulin dose. If he stays high today, I believe he is due for an increase. On 8/1, he dropped to 84 BG at +9. I gave him some fancy feast pate LC at that time to stop him from dropping further.
In the past, Phoenix has only been able to take 10.50 units for a few days before I have had to reduce his insulin. But this increase in his BG I believe has been caused by the gentamicin breathing treatments that vet put him on. This is when his BG starting getting higher. The gentamicin has also given him diarrhea. He has finished with the gentamicin almost a week ago but the side effects are still there. I read that the diarrhea may even take a month to clear up.
Phoenix is still taking amoxicillin but he has taken this quite a lot in the past with no problems. I have tried to schedule a consult with his vet but his next appointment is not for another week. His vet had a family emergency and won't be back until next week. I believe I will get better advice regarding his insulin from all of you.
I have read that an infection can raise BG levels. His blood work was slightly elevated and the vet said this could be caused by an infection. I had taken him to the vet because he was gasping like an asthma attack. He is fine now.
Should I increase Phoenix's insulin dose tomorrow if he doesn't go below 100 BG today? I usually increase only .25 units but do your think I should increase .50 units instead? This will make his insulin dose 11.25 units.
I would really appreciate your advice. Phoenix seems okay but I still worry.
