? 3/7 - Gen, post-hospital - not eating and vomiting

im so sorry to hear hes looking under the weather again.. it can be up and down sometimes. 🥲 i remember u saying the vet was worried even w medicine he wont eat much sometimes.. are all the tests to also determine his inappetance?? im sorry its been such a struggle…. how been holding up?? 😖💖

and sure carry him over.. see if he’ll drink or potty. ✨
 
I tried carrying Gen over to where the water is, but he didn't drink. I wound up giving him a little with an oral syringe. Tried giving him some more of the boiled chicken (heated a little), but no dice there.

He's also had his cerenia now, and more gabapentin and ondansetron. I'm going to try the mirtazapine in about 40 minutes. And give him some insulin.

This is horrible. I feel so helpless.

I've never done it before, but I have some beef Beechnut baby food. I'm not sure how much I should give him, or how he'll react.

He's pretty mad right now because I administered the mirtazapine dose ... and I'm not sure how much he actually got down. He certainly tried to spit it up. I tried to assist it along with some water (from a syringe) but I didn't think of that until he'd already run off and had a big goopy string of saliva hanging out of his mouth, so he may have gotten a bunch of it back out? :/

At least he's running around a bit. I don't like that he's running from me, but he hasn't moved around a whole lot today in general.

He does, but I think he's been really nauseous. I hope the ondansetron and cerenia are helping.

(That vomit earlier was slightly ... explosive coming out. Or ... fountain-like? It wasn't like when I've seen him cough up a hairball.)

Do you have larger syringes that you can put food into. You can use smaller ones, but it's more time consuming. You want to make the food consistency soupy, so that the food can be pushed through the syringe. So water it down. When syringe feeding it is VERY important to place the syringe to the side of his mouth, squirting small amounts into the mouth, and checking to see that he is swallowing (just watch his little throat for the swallows). There is a risk of aspiration of food when syringe feeding, so it's important to not go too fast and to insert the food in the side of the mouth and not straight down the throat. It's very messy going. Have lots of paper towels under him and on hand.

I do, I ordered them awhile ago when I was worried about a previous, less acute episode of inappetence. I think the baby food is already very watery, but I'll have a look. Thanks, Mary.
 
He was wailing a little while ago, went and wailed in the litterbox, and left a very soft/partly diarrhea poop. He's wailed more since, and I keep expecting him to puke again, but so far, he hasn't. My poor, poor boy.

I managed to get almost 3oz of very watered-down beef puree baby food into him before he was very done with the whole experience. I hope that will be enough, and that he keeps it down. His BG is definitely dropping.

There's a bit of shredded chicken and a bit of Recovery out for him if he decides to eat more. I was surprised he didn't go for water after the syringe feeding, but he didn't.

I should be heading to bed. Full of concern ... so grateful I get to work from home tomorrow.

The explosive vomiting happened when Indy had his IBD flareup a couple months ago. It is freaking terrifying.

I'm glad you were able to get him to eat at least a little bit and that you will be able to be home with him tomorrow. Hope you are able to get some snuggles tonight. <3

I just read through your thread. So sorry he’s feeling so rotten. How is he now? I hope you both are sleeping well. Small amounts of food at a time. He might have eaten too much too fast. I mentioned my vet said if they eat too much at one time it can make them feel yucky. Sending feel better vines.
