My heart is in a thousand pieces and my eyes are awash with tears as I'm posting this. Please help me to mourn and to celebrate a life well lived.

Gabby is a “pound kitty” who won my heart by curling up on my legs and chewing on my shoelaces when we met at the shelter. Her estimated birthday is Valentine’s Day, 2000. Her predecessor, Gracie, crossed the Bridge on that day and Gabby possesses many of Gracie’s qualities. As best we could guess, Gabby was born around the same time that Gracie crossed. Gabby is a bit of a diva and will not allow anyone except me test her and anyone giving her a shot has to be very courageous and crafty. She is clearly a mama's girl and defines “tortitude.”

Gabby was diagnosed with FD on 5-26-2009. At the time of diagnosis, she was a very sick kitty. She had pancreatitis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and hepatic lipidosis. She spent 3 days on the ICU with two vets being just as happy as I was that she survived. Since that time, she’s been healthy and enduring the relentless attention of Gizmo who adores her. She rightfully earned her crown as the diving diva. It was a challenge to get her numbers regulated and the help of the many people who guided my learning has been valued on a daily basis.

Fast forward to October. At that vet visit, Gabby’s labs showed the early stages of kidney disease and her blood pressure was high. We started her on medication for her blood pressure that affected her appetite. By Thanksgiving, she’d lost an alarming amount of weight and her kidney values were awful. As you’ve all seen, I was able to keep her well regulated until very recently when her BG values became worse than when she was first diagnosed. The kidney disease was very rapidly progressing. Despite an appetite stimulant, medications for nausea, sub-q fluids, and a phosphorus binder, Gabby’s body was just not rebounding. She has been fading away before my eyes.

I know I have said this to several people on the Board. A cat will tell you when it’s her time. It’s our job to be wise enough to listen. This morning, Gabby refused to eat. She has been lying next to her water bowl. It was before dawn, I lit a fire and I picked her up, laid down with her on the sofa with her cuddled on my chest. She gave me a small purr – something she has not done in the last week or two. I told her how much I love her and she looked in my eyes and told me that it was her time to fly free and join the many of her friends who are already at the Bridge. The vet will be here later today.

Gizmo knows Gabby is sick – he spent a good half of an hour grooming her. In my heart, I know that when we bring a kitty into our home, it is a forever decision and that ultimately we choose tears since their time is relatively short. Gabby is my kitty and I am her bean and she let me give her shots, fluids, pills and all else that is involved with her care without a peep. (She hisses at everyone else.) She has weathered a move across the country and to a new condo that she loves as much as I do, the loss of her first companion, George, the ministrations of Gizmo, and this last battle is one that at almost 16 years of age, she just doesn’t have the stamina for. I do not want to let her go but that would be for me and it would be far too painful to see her fade away further.

So, please light candles and send soft light to grace my kitty’s way to the Bridge and to assure her that she is well loved and that her friends will be there to keep her safe and will understand if she doesn’t want to play -- because, after all, she’s a tortie and they will have to win her trust.

OMG Sienne, what a beautiful eulogy.
I am so sorry. It is obvious how much you love Gabby and how much she loves you. It is the ultimate act of loving for you to give her wings.

Oh Sienne. Tears are falling as I'm typing. I'm so so sorry. I will be lighting a candle to help light the way for your little girl. And Miss Curry will be waiting for her and will totally understand her "tortie way".

Keeping you, Gabby and Gizmo in my thoughts and prayers.

Lots of love and hugs,
Tena, Curry(GA), Zeke and Sidney

My heart breaks for you. I pray that you find strength today and comfort in knowing that you are giving Gabby the greatest gift of all. My candles have been lit to guide Gabby's way.

To One in Sorrow

Let me come in where you are weeping, friend,
And let me take your hand.
I, who have known a sorrow such as yours,
Can understand.

Let me come in -- I would be very still
Beside you in your grief;
I would not bid you cease your weeping, friend,
Tears can bring relief.

Let me come in -- I would only breathe a prayer,
And hold your hand,
For I have known a sorrow such as yours,
And understand.

Sienne, oh I'm SO SO sorry it's sweet Gabby's time to cross....she's taking a piece of my heart with her. I share tears, Gabby's been bigger than life for so long. BIG HUGE Loooooooooong hug. I'm so thankful she's known such love and care. Remember - she's not gone, you just have to hug her differently.

Soar high sweet girl...landing softly back in Mama's and Gizmo's broken hearts....

((((((((Sienne Gabby and Gizmo)))))))) I am sending my strongest prayers and vines and light. My GA's Tiger, Junior and Tails will all be awaiting Gabby with open paws. But still my heart is breaking for you, big hugs...

I am so sorry - my heart is breaking for you. Gabby sounds like a very special kitty who was lucky enough that she had a devoted and loving bean that took great care of her and loved her her entire life. Fly free, Gabby - there are lots of cats waiting for you on the other side to welcome you and show you the ropes.

{{{Sienne}}},

I have been somewhat out of touch, so I had no idea that Gabby's situation was so dire. I am so very, very sorry to hear she has told you she is ready to cross. We are never ready when they are. My heart is heavy for you and Gizmo.

You were one of the people that was the most helpful to me when I first started this dance, and you have always been an amazing mentor and guide for me and so many others. You are such a strong woman, and you've been through a lot yourself in the past year or so, but you've always been there for us. I hope that, in return, we can give you some comfort as you learn to live with the Gabby-shaped hole in your heart. We all grieve with you and wish your baby well on her new journey. :bighug:

Fly free, sweet Gabby, and land softly.

I am so sorry to hear this. She has had a life full of love and leaves behind a lifetime of memories. Safe crossing, Gabby. Send your Mom a message when you get to the Bridge.

Sienne, wishing you peace as you help your girl on the last leg of her journey.

((((Sienne)))) you have been our rock & guidance. May you be blessed with comfort & memories of your beloved Gabby. May she fly free & land softly at the Rainbow Bridge, & keep watch over her beloved mama bean. Purrs & Love being sent your way on this very difficult daycat_wings>o:rb_icon: Cindy & Angel Sabrina

Sienne- What a touching tribute to your sweet Gabby. I look at her SS often for some insight into my own struggles in this dance. It breaks my heart to see that she has told you it's her time. I will light a candle and think of her, you, and Gizmo today. :bighug:

(((Sienne & Gizmo))) I am so sorry and sad for you and Gizmo. What a beautiful and loving life she has there with you and Gizmo. I've been following Gabby's condo as it's helped me understand Katie's strong tortitudes in a good and humorous way. Sending comfort vines and prayers. We will light a candle to show Gabby the way. Sending comfort vines, hugs and prayers.

Oh, Sienne! (((((Hugs))))

I'm so sorry to hear about dear Gabby. I've been away for a while from this board but tried to sneak in once in a while to make sure all is still well with you all. I'm so so so sorry to read this. Sending you the most healing vines and thoughts your way. I hope you find comfort in having provided the most loving of home for Gabby. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Oh no, not Gabby. We are so very sorry to read of her soon to be crossing. And we send you hugs and love. Our hearts are breaking yet again for another loss of our sweet kitties. Thank you for sharing her amazing story. We will miss her and her tortie-tude very much. You and Gabby taught us so very much to help our beloved Zener and we know you have helped so many others here too.

We have our candle lit for Gabby and have sent word to Zener of her arrival. He will get all the kitties lined up to provide the greeting she will feel like she deserves. Our love is with you today Sienne as you give Gabby the most difficult yet loving gift of all. Fly free our sweet Gabby, land softly and look for the black cat line of honor as your arrive.

Dear ((((Sienne)))), We will be lighting Stu's candle tonight to help illuminate Gabby's way to the Bridge, where all of her GA pals will be waiting in welcome (respecting her tortitude, of course). How difficult it is to make this decision. But in giving Gabby this loving gift you hold her close and you both remember with joy the wonderful years you shared.
We are deeply sorry that it is Gabby's time to fly free. We are keeping you both, and Gizmo too, in our hearts.

Sienne I am so sorry that it is Gabby's time to cross the bridge. You two had a very special bond and even though Gabby will not be with you physically she will live forever in your heart. Hold close the special, wonderful memories of your time together to give you strength and peace as Gabby leaves to join all the other FDMB kitties that are waiting for her.

Sienne, I don't even have any sensible words. I'm so sad for you today. But so happy for all your yesterdays with Gabby. You have been a wonder with her and she absolutely knows how much you love her. Basil will be there waiting. Please tell Gabby that my three little dogs are probably STILL teasing Basil a bit and so she needs to just give them one good hiss and they will run.

My heart breaks for you, Sienne. It does.

Tears flowing here ...so very heartbroken to see this news.

Willie, Herbie and I will be lighting the mantle candle that Miss Belle watches over this evening to help light Gabby's way. Your family here will be holding you and Gizmo close both in mourning and celebration of one of our Legends.

Fly free, pretty girl and land softly. So many of your friends are anxious to see you.

Beautiful. The love between you and Gabby has been just beautiful. I'm so glad she nibbled on your shoelaces that day. Such a cute beginning and now with oceans of tears you have to say goodbye. We are all crying with you today. I'm so very sorry Cheryl. My heart and tears are with you today.

(((Sienne)))
Sending kisses and loving thoughts to Gabby~there are SO many of her trusted friends already there at the bridge,
waiting to welcome her and keep her company until we are all together once again...

And hugging you across the miles as you face this sad time. As you have comforted so many others here on the forum
may YOU be comforted knowing that you have done all you can for your Dear Sweet Gabby. The final gift
is setting her free so that she will no longer be in pain. You have been the Best of Mothers to her and the Best of
friends as well.
I pray that you and Gizmo will hold each other and be comforted with the memories of the years you all shared with
