Phoenix's BG numbers have been great. Tonight, I stayed up all night to monitor him and see how low he dropped. I gave him fancy feast hc at +5 BG 79 and again at +8 BG 75. Phoenix really didn't drop that low but I didn't want him to drop any lower.

My question is, should I hold his insulin dose at 11 and give snacks at +5 and +8?
Or should I decrease his insulin just a small amount?

I love his numbers but I worry about him dropping really low while I am asleep. His numbers stayed pretty stable all night though. I have seen that a lot of cats retain these numbers on a daily basis without having to be closely monitored every hour.

Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Hi Susan

Phoenix is looking good. Feeding a little HC or MC every now and then to manipulate the curve is fine. If you find that you are propping him up with HC/honey, it may be better to take a reduction.
Tonight's cycle is probably an early indicator that a reduction is coming.

See how long you can keep him at this dose without having to stay up all night and day testing and feeding. You can't keep that up too long - for you own sake. And unless you are well rested, you cannot take care of Phoenix! :-)

When you use higher carbs you need to monitor more because there is possibility that they will dive once the carbs leave the system.

Thank you, Bhooma, I think I might try just reducing his insulin by .25 to 10.75. If his BG starts going high, I can always increase again. I know I am supposed to decrease his dose a lot more but I really don't want his BG to go up very much.

I would be more comfortable if I could keep him around 100 - 170.

Susan, I know you are concerned about him going high, but a 0.25U decrease at 11U is too little to really affect numbers. I would try 0.5U at least.

You and Phoenix have come a long way! Nice runs of greens on that dose....

Sorry you had to stay up all night, he's looking really good though. Hope you get some rest!

Nice numbers, yesterday. You must be exhausted, Susan.
Yes, I admit it, I am exhausted today. I don't understand how people handle these numbers and not check every hour. In the past, Phoenix has gone from a BG of 86 down to 28 within 30 minutes.

I hate decreasing his insulin but I worry about his safety if I fell asleep and his BG dropped. I have been reading your posts about Susie as well. I hear you have ducks also. Have a nice day and give Susie a kiss !!

Yes, they were great numbers. I wish I could keep him at those numbers and still go to sleep.

Phoenix was actually flat last night. You didn’t need to stay up all night. I know you were too worried to sleep. Would he eat from an auto feeder? Good luck with the decrease.

Do you think I should leave his insulin at 11 units? I decreased it to 10.5 this morning and an hour after breakfast, he was at 145.
Maybe I should leave it at 11 units and check every 2 hours instead. I am just scared that his BG will go low while I am sleeping. I want what is best for Phoenix. Could you confer with Bhooma and see what you both think is the best thing to do? Thanks

From what I see on your SS, you are feeding him HC a couple of times in almost every PM cycle to prevent a dive at AMPS. Which is not bad in itself. Like I said, you will need to test to ensure he stays up after the HC has worn off. You may be able to keep him at this dose a while longer by intervening with higher carbs, but I won't be surprised if he earns that reduction soon.

Elise, what do you think?

I kind of agree since every time I give him hc, his BG goes up for 1 hour and then he starts falling again. I hated to see his BG go up to the mid 200s already this morning. He is feeling a lot better though and is very alert and active. Thank you both, I really appreciate your help.

That is him boucing. Dosing is based on how low they go.

I will not be surprised to see him hold this reduction. And hopefully you can get some sleep! :)
Thank you, Bhooma, the first couple of times I stayed up at night I enjoyed it. Now, I am getting tired. But I must say that I would stay up every night to see him feeling better.
