((((MOGS))))) I wish I could take away all your exhaustion and worry and wave a magic wand to make Saoirse all better right away.

Since I can't do that for you I am sending you and Saoirse a never-ending stream of hugs, prayers and positive energy!

Mogs - age is just a number as we all well know. Our Shadow was 17 when she had her second kidney crash - she was in the ER vet hospital for 4 days on a fluids + high dose potassium IV. Even if we could have brought her home and done IV here, we couldn't possibly have calibrated the potassium to be safe at home, especially with her having a heart murmur. No-one at either our regular vet or our ER vet suggested we do anything other than treat - we knew our cat just as you know your cat. And we all knew she'd recover just as Saoirse will recover. Everything you do is done out of love for her and because of that you will only ever do what's best for her. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Mogs, you have a lot on your plate. I know you don't need anything else, but is a feeding tube an option until the mouth heals? Healing vines sent.

Her eye area is much improved over the last few days. If I had known in advance of the eye op that there would be difficulties in giving Saoirse her meds afterwards I would have asked about the possibility of their putting in a feeding tube while she was under. I don't think it's a good option for Saoirse in the current situation. Even if nothing else were in the mix, the post-anaesthesia queasies would be worse for her than the temporary issues with hydration. Once she's properly hydrated she's in really great form now. If I can, with the vets' help, get her nausea sorted and onto an appy stimulant then that would solve the fluids issue. When she doesn't need the collar in place any more that will make a huge difference, too, and I think that it may be possible for her to finish with the collar next week. (Opthalmologist said 2-3 weeks needed for things to settle and we're nearly there with that.)

I was a bit surprised when they left the IV out yesterday. someone at the practice needs to realize that stability might trump stress right now ...
[Emphasis mine]

This is the whole problem in a nutshell, Andy. Same issue with the referral hospital.

I was quite miffed that they left her without the IV yesterday. I can appreciate their reasoning about wanting to see how she did without it but, to my way of thinking, while trying to clear a UTI the hydration would have been of much greater importance to Saoirse than a 'status check'.

((((((((Moggy))))))))
you and Saoirse WILL get through this. we are sending so much love and healing energy across the pond, it will heal both of you !!!!!
Love you both.

Thank you, Nadine. Could you PM me with the info about the supplements that helped you? I'd really appreciate it.

Much love to you and Mr Tibbs.

A very perky Saoirse in her new digs last night ...

I must say I was surprised they didn't at least leave the catheter in so if needed she could be hooked up quickly... that being said if she ripped it out she must have had some energy:cat:

Don't do this to me, Linda. I am not being cruel to my cat.

In all honesty I feel very hurt and upset that you wrote the above. I would hope that you might know my mind and nature much better than that by now. Saoirse is actually doing much better than I am at the moment. She was in absolutely flying form last night. This is not a cat on her way out. The biggest problem I am having at the moment is, like many other caregivers whom I've seen post here since I joined, that the vets keep releasing her too early. It doesn't help that, despite my providing them with everything she needs to help her they have been ignoring me and doing things like not putting her phosphorus binder into her food. (Did it myself tonight for the food I dropped in for them to give her.)

.

I acknowledged that your cat has gone through a lot, (surely you dont have an arguement with that???) and asked to confirm her age. (so I could better learn and understand from your experiences with her). I was expressing sympathy for her situation, and yours. What the heck was wrong with doing that? I wonder why that hit a nerve with you?

Well isn't that the "cushiest" kitty condo! Looks very spacious and cosy and Saoirse appears quite content in there. That pic could be the front cover for Better Kitty Homes and Gardens! :D You have 2 beautiful girls who seem to like to pose for the camera. Menace always moves and I usually end up with a blur or a butt shot!

We're all continuing to send you and Saoirse strength and love. More hugs for you and scritches for the girls and a pile of this for whoever needs some soothing music to their ears!

So sorry to hear Saoirse is back at the vet's, but if that's what's best for her right now, then that's where she needs to be. I hope they get her stabilised again soon, and fully, this time (!) so she can come back home to stay. :) I love her soft-sided little "apartment"! She looks very happy and alert.

Sending tons and tons of prayers, well-wishes, hugs and scritches!

Mogs, Saoirse looks GREAT! I LOVE her new digs! She looks quite perky.

It is hard to understand the reason the vets didn't keep on with the fluids but there had to be areason they would stop that very basic treatment. Perhaps they were worried she was getting too much fluid.. Too much can be as bad as too little.

Dottie is a wee bit better too. Perhaps our luck is changing .

Wow, Saoirse looks great in her new kitty accommodations. Very nice, indeed! And she is most definitely a very photogenic little cat person... quite the cover girl! I think she's making good progress, even though there are obviously still some bumps in her road to recovery. That certainly is to be expected. I'm very encouraged to know that her eye is looking much better. I had the same thought that @Jeanne & Dottie expressed about the removal of the IV. Maybe there were concerns that she could be getting too much fluid. I've seen that happen with humans and know it can cause all sorts of additional problems.

I'll keep watching for forthcoming updates on your baby girl... and on you, as well. I'm a bit concerned about you right now, too. Take good care of yourself and just do the best you can do for both of you. Sending another boat load of hugs, prayers, and scritches your way.

I think I'm going to have to let my girl go. :(

She's back home with me but I can't get her to eat for me. She's got trace ketones (0.8 on blood ketone meter). BG is 14.1 (Alphatrak). I managed to get her to take some gravy from some Hill's i/d but it's very high carb. I've given her a skinny 0.25IU Lantus. DKA treatment is not an option.

Short of a miracle I don't think there is anything else I can do for her.

Oh Mogs, do not lose hope. Maybe once her BG comes down a little and she settles back into being home, Saoirse will eat for you. She's done so well despite the bumps in the road, I'm sure she will rally! She just needs a bit more time for her sore mouth to settle down. I know this has been and continues to be an extremely difficult time for you both but Saoirse's proven she is a fighter! Did she eat at the vet at all? I know there was something said about feeding tubes earlier but I can't find it right now. Would a temporary feeding tube be an option?
Saoirse, be a good little girl and eat something for your Momma Bean. You can do it! A massive load of healing thoughts, prayers, hugs and scritches being sent across the pond!:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Her mouth's OK now, Linda. It's nausea that's the problem. I am not willing to put her through syringe feeding. I haven't given her an appy stimulant either. If this is to be our last night I want her to be as peaceful and relaxed as I can make her. She has had famotidine and ondansetron. I will continue to gently offer her food but it's up to her now.

I would welcome any suggestions members have about how I can make her as comfortable as possible till I can speak to the vet.

.

I think you've done all you reasonably can with meds to encourage her to eat - as you say, it's up to her to go ahead and try to eat something now. I would agree with continuing to offer food - maybe ever so slightly warmed if you can to see if that encourages her a little. Other than that, all I tend to do with the cats here if they're feeling rough is keep them warm - wrapped in a blanket or a towel warmed in the tumble dryer for a few minutes and love on them. And hope and pray as hard as you can! :bighug:

Mogs, I'm so sorry to hear this, but I've still got hope and I want you to have hope, too. Have you tried removing the Elizabethan collar? Try it and see what happens. She'll need supervision, but let her roam around the house a bit, too. Please don't give up. Hugs and many prayers.

Oh..... Try not to lose hope, Mogs. You've come so far and done so much - far beyond what most people could contemplate. I understand how worrying it is if Saoirse can't eat, but she is still adapting to her new way of life... Try all the tricks you can, again, and it is more than probable that she will perk up at some point. As we've said before, recovery is not always a straight upward curve. I think you're thinking negatively because you're so tired - literally exhausted. Do try some kind of relaxation exercises if you can to restore yourself... and then you'll be back on the case...

Thinking of you
Diana

Have you tried removing the Elizabethan collar?
I have, Carol. It has been off since she came home at lunchtime. The eye area is pretty much healed now and it was so good to see her have a proper relaxed sleep with her paw for an eye shade again. :)

She was really purry and lapping up scritches most of the afternoon. That makes me happy. :)

.

She perked up a bit and she ate another teaspoon of i/d. I have her up on the sofa snuggled up beside me now with her posh new fleecy blankie over the two of us. She seems fairly relaxed now. She's purring away. (Not a stressy purr, btw.)
Such a good sign, Mogs! Now that the collar is off, maybe she'll relax and eat better. Give her scritches from all of us, too. Tell her we are sending love to her from all over the world. And that we want her to EAT!
