she's been thru a lot.... so cranky is a good sign.

would she eat a little cheese? is there any human food she just loves as a treat.... so you can prime her appetite a little.

I know Mogs - ketones are always the worry with our diabetics. Can you call the hospital and ask them what they think - whether or not one missed, or partially missed, dose of antibiotic is going to be a problem at this stage.
 
It's the food and insulin I'm worried about more than the antibiotic.

Can you syringe feed her just a little to see if that would jump-start her appetite? Of course, only if she'll allow it without struggling and hurting the surgery site.
 
Hi @rhiannon and shadow (GA),

Do you know whether if I crushed up a dose of cypro and put it into a syringe with a little bit of water juice from her food and and popped it into her cheek pouch whether any might absorb into her system? What's scuppering me here is that you can't pill her at the moment.

Or do you know whether cypro is available as an injectible?

That's what I wasn't sure about - if she's anything like Rosa, she's going to wriggle around if you try and put anything in her mouth. And you don't need her having any trouble with such a new wound.

I haven't heard of cypro being injectable, but it can be given as a trans-dermal gel. I'm just not sure if it would need to be compounded or if the vet might have it in stock.

Do you think she's being cranky because she's in pain? Might it be worth giving her a little more - I know it might make her sleepy, but she might actually be more likely to eat if she's half asleep.
 
She has started purring a bit. Maybe it's kicking in? It used to take a while on the smaller dose she normally had. Must remember a very gradual taper of the bupe.
 
Purring is good...no, actually it's GREAT! Hopefully she'll settle a little more over the next while and eat a little for you too.
 
I'm still here with you, Mogs. And I know others are too. I hope the painkillers help you at least a little bit. And I'm really glad you managed to eat something - you need it. Has Saoirse had some insulin? Maybe you could nap just for an hour? She might feel a bit more like eating by then too.
 
OK, that's like me on a bad day too then...once I do sleep, I'm out cold and even setting more than one alarm doesn't work. :( How high are her numbers today?
 
How long has it been since she ate, Mogs? It looks like from your comments that she ate really good for you about 3 1/2 hours ago, so you may just be trying too hard to get her to eat more right now

Her appetite may take a little time to get back to "normal" with all she's been through
 
It's nearly 10 hours ago and it wasn't a big meal, Chris. I'm just so worried about ketones. If I could get some cypro into her it would help.

ETA - and she has had very little overall since the op.
 
So glad to hear you got some food into you earlier? Does Saoirse show any interest in food when you are eating normally? Just wondering if seeing you eat a little something, might give her a bit of the munchies. ;)
 
Mogs, I know your worried. But she just got home and needs to re-adjust again. Maybe just 30 minutes of just letting her rest quietly with you snuggling her (as best you can with a cone) Will calm her down and you too. Then try some food again.
 
You should have seen my house last month when I was caring for four cats with cancer and other assorted illnesses. Even now that two are GA, it's still a pigsty.

Are you sure you can't pill her? I had to give Cinco his AB after his surgery and was able to do it without hurting the incision. Of course, he is a very mellow cat. Is it pill or liquid? If pill, you might ask for a liquid instead. I know that's not ideal for a diabetic, but getting it into her is more important right now. Of course, you also want to have food on board.

I hope the Cypro helps. Do you also have anti-nausea meds, in case she's got an upset tummy?
 
My biggest problem is that I'd rather cuddle a cat than tidy up. I figure with all the assorted problems our kitties have had, the cleaning will still be there another day. Our time with our kitties isn't guaranteed so I'm making the most of it. If anyone shows up here and doesn't like it, they know where the door is! ;)

Normally I give Saoirse ondansetron as part of her pancreatitis maintenance regimen. Because of the op she has been receiving Cerenia injectable over the last few days and, despite the long fast thankfully she didn't show any signs of nausea when I got her to eat at the hospital yesterday evening. The opthalmologist told me not to attempt pilling for now. Saoirse is an easy cat to pill and it's something I'm quite confident doing in general, but for how Saoirse is at the moment I agree completely with the opthalmologist that it's a no-no for the time being. I feel a smidgen less anxious now that I know I can administer the appy stimulant to her. Now the wait to see if it will help things along. It used to take about 90 minutes to kick in when she was on it before.

Saoirse's very swollen, God love her, but they advised me that her recovery is progressing along normal lines and the degree of swelling is what they would expect.

I have to drop in an Rx to the local pharmacy tomorrow morning. I will ask whether cypro comes as a liquid. If yes, I can ask for an Rx for it at the hospital tomorrow. Thank you for the suggestion.

I'm sad to hear about the little ones you've been caring for. :bighug:

Not me, that's for sure. I did have just 3 takers for my lap...until our housemate's older cat suddenly decided (at the grand old age of 16) that she'd like to be a lap-cat too! So now there are 4...and not enough hours in the day for them all! And I'm perfectly happy with that. :D

Hi Dawn,

Yep, using it for appetite stimulation. It also helped Saoirse's mood last time she took it (has an antidepressant action). She is actually purring more rhythmically now with the bupe/cypro combo. (Note: she has been on both meds at the same time in the past so I know she's OK with them.)

Thank you again, Dawn, for sharing stories about Peek-a-Boo. The two of you are very much an inspiration to me, and thinking of you two has been helping me enormously over the past days. :bighug:

I'm thinking of getting something big enough for me to get inside inside with her to give her her food and also something that doesn't have bits of protruding metal everywhere. Spent nearly two hours tonight wrapping tissue paper 'cushions' round all the bits on her current cage that might catch the collar.

That actually looks pretty good. If my calculations are correct, it's just over 4 feet in diameter (I HATE METRIC!) so Saoirse should have plenty of room to move about. As for you joining her, probably big enough for you to be able to assist her with meals and give some cuddles and scritches.

Little paper cushions.......oh that must have been fun.....NOT! :p
 
Ugh, I can't do metric either even though I grew up in the UK. But, yes, Google tells me it's 4.1 feet in diameter which should be plenty for a cat. :)
 
Oh Mogs, I'm so happy to hear that Saoirse is home! All things considered, it sounds like she is making a good recovery so far. It's got to be such a huge relief to you to have her with you again. And we all know Mama's love is the most awesome medicine!

I wish I could stay up with you but I have a very early day tomorrow, driving 2 1/2 hours away, going through Philadelphia (I hate city driving with a passion!) for a day full of tests and procedures at the hospital, myself (yuck, actually I'm kinda dreading it). But I know you're already in very good hands!
