Well guys unfortunately Ziggy was off to the vet this morning woke up and his left ear was completely swollen he’s likely going back on antibiotics and he’s having fluid drained the vet okayed him for the libre so we’ll be having that installed while he’s going to be on antibiotics anyway there’s less of a chance of infection I won’t be pricking his ears for the next few days but we will be getting the libre installed as soon as they can do it

We’re going to have the freestyle libre installed after he has a few days of recovery.. they said while he’s on antibiotics he’s less likely to develop an infection from the libre, so they’re all for it at this point still waiting on some tests we did two days ago to come back so I hope that doesn’t change anything

@tiffmaxee no he’s never had this issue they told me it’s because I’ve been pricking his ears I’m sure the FIV is a big factor as well because he’s so susceptible to infections and bad reactions in general =[

I guess that possible but I wouldnt think very likely just because of pricking ears. Maybe pricking ears and the FIV or something else...

At least vet is on board for the libre!
 
I think it’s gotta be a factor of many things, his ears have long ago collapsed from a long term transdermal compounded medication (which we stopped immediately at the time) but his ears have a significant amount of scar tissue from that so between his ears collapsing, FIV and me poking them I think it was just too much. More of a snowball effect than a just one thing I guess they said it’s the pricking because it’s the only thing I can change I can’t change the scar tissue I can’t change that the ears have collapsed and I can’t change the FIV =[

Saying that to you doesnt exactly seem fair though. I tend to be a little more aggressive on this cause my first vet didnt want me testing at home at all so I look at vets as necessary evils sometimes LOL
 
I was so proud we had gotten BG testing down to a science, I was getting blood on the first, second max third prick, he was so good for it and it didn’t even seem to bother him at all so it’s just very disheartening to see him going through surgery again and to meet yet another obstacle

my vet actually suggested home testing and this forum shes actually amazing she takes the time to read my spreadsheets and go through all of it she was very insisting on home testing because his fructosomine tests continue to be in normal range she wants all the information she can get

I love that you lucky momma and lucky Ziggy!

Our newer vet is all for home testing she wants me to use an AT...and isnt a fan of the site but she is letting me do my thing since he is doing so well

@Rainbow Conti YES I’m so happy your new vet is on board with home testing ! Makes all the difference my vet loves this site she was a member herself when her baby had diabetes she said she learned more about feline diabetes here than in school… you gotta give credit where credit is due and the wonderful people here really know what they’re talking about ! Our vets should be thankful we have such a wonderful community of knowledge and support
 
I'm so sorry Ziggy has had to deal with so many issues, poor sweetheart! :bighug: Glad to hear your vet is on board with the testing and this wonderful site. Sending healing vibes for Ziggy and I hope he is good with the Libre. You may want to investigate something like the catsuitical or Thundershirt in the event he hates having that thing attached.
 
Oh that’s a wonderful suggestion I had a few tight shirts for him from his last surgery (ruptured abscess) but if there’s something specially made for keeping the libre on I will definitely get that he’s normally so very good about everything, cones sweaters bandaids no matter what chaos ensues he always seems calm thank you so much for your wonderful thoughts and wishes I hope this New Years turns around for him he’s overdue for a break <3
 
I'm so very sorry to hear about poor poor Ziggy. :(

I have used the Libre as well. Ruby tends to scratch it off but I put it on the side of her neck the last time and covered it with a Kitty Kollar (used for e-tubes) and it stayed on like a charm and didn't seem to irritate her as much. Here's a video of her with the Libre and Kitty Kollar on. If you have access to a PC desktop or laptop, get the standalone Libre Reader as you can download the raw data and have 24/7 information about how he is doing, even when you are not scanning it.

Oh wow that’s amazing I totally have access to a laptop thank you so much that could make all the difference I want to get as much information as possible ! Did you continue to install the libre long term or is it something you used intermittently?

It's something I use intermittently because it seems to really bother Ruby and they have never lasted the entire 14 days. Either she scratches it off or the sensor konks out. Blood testing is a lot less stressful for us in the end.

@Tomlin isn't on very often but she uses it regularly, taught me how to apply it myself and how to use it to its greatest potential. @Larry and Kitties also uses the Libre.
 
That’s good to know I’m hoping Ziggy and I can use it long term for the most part especially after the ear swelling incident this morning I’m definitely gonna let the vets do it only because I’m terrified if I do it wrong in the slightest it will warrant an infection it seems like Murphy’s law is a prominent force in Ziggys life lately I really appreciate the stand-alone libre reader suggestion and all the wonderful information you and everyone has given me i can’t explain in words how helpful it’s been
