I have a really hard time going on vacation because I don’t enjoy it I always think I wonder if Mimi‘s blood sugar is dropping so the only time I’ve ever gone away has maybe been for a total of 36 hours or so. I know there’s a vacation dose that I can put her on; my only reservation with that is having her blood sugar get out of whack and possibly getting a bout of pancreatitis and ketones increasing, because there was one time I left for about 36 hours- this was the first time I ever did that and I was instructed to start a vacation dose- half the dose at least three cycles before.
I left and it just messed her all up - her key tones went high and I had to give her subcutaneous fluids for a couple days. It’s possible I overreacted because the meter was reading 1.2 or something like that. Now that I think about it I think that that was too little of insulin for her and she just needed more.
Anyway, what I’m thinking is what if I keep her dose the same if I’m gone for a couple of days (I don’t know if I could go any longer than that without having a panic attack) and leaving her all high carb food that way I know she won’t get hypo- because that’s the biggest thing I worry about second being her not eating because she doesn’t feel well for some reason or whatever reason and ketones come back.
So that’s the question can I leave her high carb food since I know that she’s always been carb sensitive? anytime her blood sugar has dropped and I’ve given her the high carb food which is 15 and higher-her blood sugar always goes up.
thanks!
