What if I have to alter timing for one shot?

Hi. I KNOW the answer's going to be how important it is to stick to a regular regimen of shot timings, etc. But, life happens and I want to address this before it does.

My work timing is usually pretty predictable. Most of my work is from my home office, which helps. However, this has been a very bad year, fiscally, and I have to take whatever work comes my way for what I do. Sometimes, that means I work East Coast hours (okay, because I'm usually home for those), sometimes West Coast hours - sometimes nights.... you get the drift.

It's rare, but sometimes I have large commutes and have to be out of the home/office at my regular shot time (sometimes, but rarely, 2 hours off), and sometimes I don't get home until after shot time (again, can be as far as 2 hours off).

I KNOW this isn't optimal - not recommended - all that. But it happens. Most often, I do have someone to cover evenings and food timing would probably not be a problem on those days, but the mornings may have no coverage for my regular shot time. I can not afford a pet sitter with diabetes experience, nor do I know any I'd trust, for these days.

My question is... when this happens - and I know it must happen to some of you sometimes... do you adjust the dosages? Do you give a little less, a little more, the same? This all, assuming things are relatively stable, of course - I know nobody can give a set answer for the weird number times...

Another option that you can consider is an 18/18 shot schedule instead of 12/12

The days that your schedule is off more than about 30 minutes, you could just skip the "scheduled" dose and shoot 6 hours late....then shoot again in 18 hours which would put you back on your usual shot times. It can mean shooting at some pretty bizarre times, but it's something we occasionally recommend when there's no other option

Just FYI too...there's really no reason you need to post a new post for each new question...You can just post your question in your daily condo in the Lantus forum. If you add the ? prefix to your subject line of your condo, it'll indicate your post that day includes a question

@Chris & China - That DOES sound bizarre, but can be workable... I think. So just to be clear... if I have to skip the morning dose (10am, usually), I can skip that one, shoot at 4pm, then the next 10am, and normal from then on? Am I seeing that all correctly? If so, that can be do-able, because even on those days that I can't get back in the afternoon, my boyfriend can probably cover 4pm (he has YET to try doing it all, but I'm teaching him).

So, if I've got it right - COOL BEANS!

BTW - thanks for the clarification on the whole condo thing - I actually had seen that word bantered around, and had no CLUE what it meant! Now I get it... it's in the daily lantus posts!!! I'll remember that (d'uh... if at this point, I can remember anything!)

Thank you!!!

My schedule used to be the same way and occasionally I was a couple hours late or more. I gave my normal dose when I got home. Since I hometested, when it came time for the next shot on their normal schedule, as long as they were above my "don't shoot" number and at least 10 hours past their last shot, I would give them their normal dose. If it was less than 10 hours, I would either wait until I could shoot or skip the shot. If I had to wait, then I would slowly adjust the shot schedule to get back at the normal time.

I'm in much the same boat, although I have less flexibility and would NOT be able to do that 18/18 thing. NYC commute times + graduate training + working in mental health + even BARELY trying to have the minimum of a life + not having any family here + no live-in (roommate or boyfriend) = Edgar is NOT on a regular shooting schedule. Not even mornings. Some days I have to be up and out of the house by 7:30, other days I'm here until 10.
There's just no way I can stick to the kind of regimented dosing recommended. It's literally impossible for me. I know a lot of people on these forums probably want to blast me for it, but what else am I supposed to do?!? It's bad enough I have to pay someone $20 a day PER DAY to come and give him seizure meds at 4 pm. What else can I do?

@vexedgirl , I really feel what you're going through. This whole thing is a *****, and NY commutes suck. Can the seizure med person do BG tests? That might give you a sense of how it's going in his system.

Only you cat people can understand
I'm happy to find this forum
Many my coworkers think I'm crazy
To give my cat insulin shots.
We are planning to go to Italy this fall
And now I don't know if we can

@Liliana Treeman -My vet techs have offered to come at least 2x/day, but they can't do the 12 hours (nor, could I afford them - although they're the only ones I'd trust). Perhaps something like Care.com? I haven't tried them, but I've read their ads...

I'm going away for 2 weeks in July. My regular vet tech is willing to stay at my place and medicate my kitties. For 100 bucks a day!!!! Ugh. I'm going to have to suck it up.

It's the overnight that costs... that's the problem. Actually, that price, UNFORTUNATELY, seems kind of standard, at least here in L.A. - especially for someone you can trust to do shots. I know - it's a ton of money - that's one reason we never get vacations anymore. I have friends who'll pet-sit that I can trust, but I don't trust any to know how to do meds and insulin correctly... I'm sorry.... :(
