? Week 1 on Lantus (just diagnosed). Am I on track?

As everyone was at one point, I am new at this. My boy was diagnosed 5/13/19 with a glucose level of 431. He started on Lantus 6/1. The reason for the 2 weeks in between diagnosis and starting Lantus was to put him on wet food cold turkey (no pun intended) and we knew that would drop his numbers. The following week he was at 323 with just the food change.

Feeding - FF Roasted Turkey Feast (Prot 56, Fat 36, carb 6) and Classic whitefish & Tuna feast (Prot 48, Fat 51, Carb 0).
Treats - freeze dried chicken 1 piece at night after shot
Activity - Indoor only, the last 2 days his energy is back and is playing with me (chasing strings up and down the stairs)
Weight - was 21 lbs now down to 20lbs. He is overweight and we are trying to get him to 16 slowly (yes, he is a large bodied cat) by increasing activity.

I sent my vet his spreadsheet, but my normal vet was out and the person covering said to increase dose to 2U (from 1). This other vet works more with dogs so I am unsure if I should take their advice as Pax's numbers have dropped.

I was also told not to shoot under 150 (I am using Relion Prime to test)

Any feedback or advice would be helpful.
Thank you

I normally give his shot about this time at he is at 95, not sure if I should or not when the vet said not to below 150

I just tested again. he went from 95 to 102 with 3/4 can of FF 3oz can of food. I guess I will skip this shot.

I personally think you are doing fantastic.

We usually say don't shoot under 120 or 150 until you have been home testing for a bit and understand how your kitty reacts.

Sounds like you have a good vet too!

Welcome!

@Diana&Tom - I found her. :)

Jennifer, as I replied on fbook (Elde Squeek), you did exactly what you should have done! Good job! Do NOT increase that dose on that number and especially not a whole unit! That's 'diabetic dog' advice. If you do end up increasing, you'll only increase by .25unit. It's going to be interesting to see where Pax is tonight... :)

30 minutes ago he was at 115. that is 15 hours after his last 1U shot

Jennifer, I suspect you'll not be shooting tonight either.... :) Those numbers are wiggling like they're supposed to wiggle without insulin!

Was that 142 at +9 food influenced? If it did have food in it, don't shoot unless it's over 200.

If it's NOT food influenced (that +9), he may be high enough that you may need to shoot (over 150 without food) but I would back off to .75 units. Pull 1 unit then TWIST the plunger slowly until a drop begins forming on the needle. Do this until you get about half way between .5 and 1.0. You're getting enough sporadic pancreatic action it's going to affect his numbers. I'd rather you err on the side of safety right now. If you weren't new, I would probably give different advice.

I will be offline when you do your PMPS so won't see your spreadsheet until tomorrow morning. Please get a last test before you head to bed just to be sure he's not doing something goofy.

Sadly he jumped up to 248 so I did give him his full shot (1U). I Was going to slowly push him to an 8:00 schedule by 15 minute increments every day due to my work schedule, but because he skipped this morning I figured I would jump an hour early this evening.

The direct link to Pax's spreadsheet isn't working. The error message say's it can't be found. Can you make sure you have the settings on "anyone with the link" so we can open it from your signature?

I just updated it. Does it work now? He is at 195. Debating if I should do the .75 shot instead of the 1 shot

Of those 2 choices, shoot the lower but I'd tend to drop all the way back to .5 to shoot twice a day. That 1u's already too much but that's probably because it's all at one time. Shooting the same amount but at half and half gives you a much smoother run.

He is at 128. 11.5 hours after .5 shot. Vet said not to shoot below 150, but that was when I was giving 1U. Advice on what I should do here? I did drop to .5U this morning.
He has spend most of the day sleeping in sun puddles, but has been moving around the house some as well. Acting like a normal lazy Saturday. Eating has also been normal.

It’s been over 30 minutes since the last last. If you haven’t fed yet, you can test again and see if he’s risen enough to shoot.

I think things are going well... I dropped him down to .25 because his numbers are good and I didn't want to skip to shots in a row. I do have to say, it is super stressful having to be at work and not being able to monitor him all the time. But, I need to live my life too I guess.

I am also a newbie suffering a bit of stress as I embark on this regimen. Tonight is just my second dose and the things I didn’t know… Like having to explain to all seven cats that they’re not getting fed at 4:30; we now get fed at 7 o’clock. I have five cats staring at me with that I could kill you look . (Two don’t care)

And RediOn doesn’t include the lance dispenser with either their lances or meter .

Good luck.... from someone even newer than you !

I don't use the lancet device. That just scared my boy... I just rub his ears and then sneak a poke, he doesn't even notice.
