Vet “Dosage” Suggestion Opinion

My wife just picked up Winston’s prescription for Lantus to get filled.
Our vet is saying to do 3 Units twice daily!
He’s been on a diet of FF for 4 days now and his numbers are low 100’s and a couple high 90’s.
Just off the diet alone he has had great progress in numbers.
My gut is saying to continue the diet strictly for at least a couple more days before considering starting the insulin.
Thoughts? And 3 units is high for his numbers right?
SS below.

I do not give dosing advice, but with 90 and 100, 3units IS WAY TOO HIGH ! we suggest to start slow on 1 unit and see how the insulin react on Winston, if you shoot 3 units with those numbers, you ARE risking a hypoglycemia episode,
and that's not a pretty sight, and hypoglycemia can also damage other organs. Please stall that shot until one of the members assists you , Please! in the meantime create a HYPO KIT, this should include some low carb foods between 0-10% carbs, some medium carb foods between 11-15% carbs, some high carb foods between 16-24% carbs, some honey or Karo Syrup, as it is normally with 90-100 you do not shoot with Lantus. Please wait! Stall that first shot

DO NOT START ON THREE UNITS. DO NOT.

The usual dosing methods are here. Under SLGS, you'd start at .5u since he's on wet food. TR requires a little calculation. But with his lower numbers, I'd wait for a more experienced member to weigh in before proceeding, personally. But whatever you do, do not start at 3u!!

How much does Winston weigh? What was he eating before he was diagnosed with diabetes? How did you find out he was diabetic? Any other conditions diagnosed at that time?

I'd continue with that 0 units dose for a bit yet. Keep feeding him multiple small meals throughout the day.

I agree with Wendy… stay with 0 units for now and keep testing as you have been and feeding as Wendy suggested.
One other thing you could do is get some Ketostix from a pharmacy and test the urine for ketones just to be sure there are none.
