Velvet Elvis seems tired and droopy

Elvis has been getting his insulin (1 unit daily) and low-carb food since Thursday. The ER vet told me I wouldn't need to glucose-test until this coming Tuesday, so I don't know what his glucose levels are. I've ordered a meter, strips & insulin, which should be here by Tuesday.

Elvis is eating, drinking and pooping appropriately -- just tired-ish. He's alert and will beat a path to the chow bowl every time I fill it, but seems to prefer to lie around and be lazy. Of course, he's still very weak from losing half his body weight, so I hope that's all it is.

Would someone explain the signs of insulin shock or insulin overdose? -- Rainey

Hi Rainey, and, of course, you too, sweet Velvet Elvis,

Did his ER vet(s) mention anything about Diabetic Ketoacidosis or DKA? The reason I'm asking is because that's what I was thinking, and imagine others were thinking, the other night when your hubby raced you and your precious furry boy to the ER... And, also, because DKA is kind of the polar opposite of being hypoglycemic...

If it was DKA, it does take a lot out of them. My Gizmo was diagnosed diabetic and DKA in the same breath... She too was tired and droopy when she came home after 3 days in ICU... She took her time recovering; but, recover she did! It took a bit of time; but, when she came back, she came back full of the piss and vinegar I had come to love!

I'm glad Velvet Elvis is home. Home is where the collective hearts beat most firmly.

And, I'm so glad he's eating! YAY!!! Eating is always good! And, he's got some weight to regain...

Please know we're thinking only good thoughts and prayers for you and your sweet furry boy -- who, for some strange reason, I'm imagining has furry sideburns... ;o)

Love and countless hopeful, healing hugs for you all,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

We called the ER vet -- no problem with ketoacidosis. However, we finally figured out what the problem was: 85 degree temps! It's been in the low 60s here, then yesterday it soared to summer weather. Elvis' only problem was that he was too hot to prance around!
Today, it's back into the 50s and he's his normal, annoying self, not leaving me alone for a minute, picking arguments with his pals ... back to the boy we love.
Thanks to all for your concern. Don't know what we'd do without you and this board.
