Hello,
I am new to this forum, I have tried to read as much as I can before making a post, so I wouldn't be asking the same questions everyone else already has, but I couldn't find an answer to it.
I am sorry, in advance, if this has already been asked and answered, also if I don't provide all the information, or as I should, but I promiss you I am doing my best.
My cat's name is Vaquinha, he is an eight year old who has been diagnosed with diabetes last July 30. I have been testing him as much as I can, but I work weird schedules, being away from home, sometimes, more than 12 hours. When he was diagnosed, the vet did a bloodwork, the only abnormal value he had was the glucose (at 400). He decided we could try to regulate his numbers just be adapting his diet (bought purina diabetic food, which he hated, started feeding him fish, shrimp, purina's canned diabetic food, mostly that).
Neurotic as I am, the first thing I did was go get a glucometer, so I could monitor his blood sugar. For 2 or so weeks we tried this, but his blood sugar was always at, around, 300/350, so August 15th I took him back to the vet. We decided we should start him on insulin, the vet didn't give me any options, he gave me caninsulin, to start him on 1 unit, every 12 hours, which I did. Again, since I am working very weird hours, I started at 8 am, so I could give the second shot at 8 pm, but soon realized that wouldn't work because I, sometimes, arrive home after that time, so my mother's been helping me out, we skipped a dose and now she is giving him the insulin at 12 am and 12 pm.
Since he stared the 1u of caninsulin, his blood sugar raised to 400's values, so I took him to the vet again on August 18th. He asked me to leave the cat there, so he could do the blood glucose curve. When I went to pick him up, he said that he was doing great on the 1 unit, his blood sugar dropped to the 200's after 6 hours... So I took him home, and, for me, the values are still the same, 400's. But at this point it's really hard to test the cat, because he got really stressed at the vet, and really afraid of being tested. So when I can test him, the values are increasing more and more, so I called the vet again, last week, and he advised me to increase to 2 units of caninsulin every 12 hours.
Now, I am still getting my cat to accept being tested, but when I magane to do it, his values raised to 500s with the 2 doses.
With this I started researching more on diabetes, and found this forum, and found that caninsulin isn't even indicated to manage cat diabetes, and I'm thinking maybe raising the dose 1u was too much, but I still can't find a reason why my cats blood sugar should increase with the insulin. I read about rebound, but I think that if that was that, his blood sugar should have, eventually normalized, but never did.
I need help, I feel my baby slipping away from me, if you have any advice, anything that can help me, please let me know. I don't have a lot of money, but I am willing to buy another insulin, if someone thinks that would help, if that is the problem. Taking him to another vet, I'm not sure would help, I live in a small island, we don't have big vet clinics here, my vet says they are care for 4 diabetic cats (including mine), and it's one of the biggest clinics over here...
I am sorry i dragged this post so much, and I am sorry if there are typos or something you don't understand, english is not my first language.
If you have any knowledge you can share, i really appreciate it.
