Hi all,

My guy has a UTI and has taken to peeing on the carpet in the hallway. It was one or two per day since Monday, today it's 4 since we went to sleep, 2 within the last 3 hours. So it seems we are at near-complete litter box avoidance.

Urinalysis (sterile drawn) showed white blood cells and bacteria, it was sent for culture & sensitivity but we won't have the results til Monday or Tuesday. He's on Orbax in the meantime since it seemed to have cleared up his last UTI - at least initially. I also started him on D-mannose and corn silk for the inflammation, but he meowled during one of this morning's "episodes" so i know he's in pain.

He won't go on the bath towels I put down after cleaning the areas with Natures Miracle (which ruined our baseboards, but that can be fixed). He just finds new places. His most recent one was literally on top of one i had just cleaned and is still wet. I'm hesitant to put down pee pads for fear of thinking he'll think it's "OK" to go there, and i don't want pee pads as a long-term solution, but our entire hallway is wet with pee and natures miracle. We need something NOW. We are booking appointments to get quotes to replace the carpets with hard floors, but in the meantime we are worried about the subfloor due to how much pee we all know unregulated diabetics put out. Plus he's CKD, plus he's drinking an insane amount of water right now.

Any solutions that worked in the short term while waiting for meds to kick in?

My cat Ravan vomits from any antibiotics. He has Kidney disease for over 3 years. The only thing I give him is D-mannose for a UTI. Half a teaspoon of D mannose in a tablespoon of water & into a feeding syringe. 3X a day for 3 days then twice a day for 2 days, then once a day . By that time the UTI is always cleared up.
He gets D-mannose 1-2 times a week as a preventative.

If your kitty has Kidney disease I wouldnt get new carpet just yet. They can get a UTI anytime. See how he reacts to the D mannose.

I've found it works better than any antibiotic. All my cats in the past got diarrhea from the Meds. ( Antibiotics cause diarrhea because they kill bacteria. There are friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract that keep it healthy and working good, with antibiotics it kills everything, even the friendly ones unfortunately.)

Dry food is not good for any cat. "There are many reasons why cats should never eat dry food. Dry food is the equivalent of junk food for cats, it is the leading cause of most urinary tract problems, and it is responsible for the obesity problem among cats. Dry food has also been implicated as one of the contributing factors to diabetes, which is reaching epidemic proportions. 1 in 50 cats may be affected, with overweight cats being at increased risk."

The people that sell dry food will post articles denying this but why take any chances? I've left wet food out overnight for years & never had any problems.

Best of Luck to You & Snuggie.

Do you have any rooms with hard floors? Bathroom? Basement? I know it feels cruel, but it's just until abx hopefully take over.

Hi Jill. Aww. It sounds like Snuggles is feeling really uncomfortable right now. And it doesn't sound like you're having too much fun either. I wish I had some great suggestions, but I'm wondering if the peeing will continue until the pain subsides. I do have a couple of ideas though. Maybe put out some new litter boxes, as he may be associating the regular box with pain. And maybe try changing the type/brand of litter? Is he having difficulty climbing in or out of the box, due to discomfort? Maybe a box with lower sides may help. I hope you can get some other suggestions here. And I hope that Snuggles is feeling better soon.

Thanks all for the great ideas and support!

I was only doing 1/8 tap for the d mannose but will follow what was said here - thanks! We are working to remove the dry food, but it’s bc our other cat is addicted. We are trying to transition her and got her a chip reader feeder that I have to train her on, but her world has been turned upside down by all that we are doing for Snuggie lately.

I put a box in the hall where he’s been “going” and he used it twice so that’s good. He seems ok hopping in and out but I’ll set up a lower one for him. I don’t want to change the others just bc of rhe sister cat who has had UTIs thanks to his huge pees since Dx. We have 4 boxes and I scoop 3x a day and clean/change litter every 2 weeks. So at this point I’d happily add for him but can’t rock her world much more.

I am considering confining him ar night to my office - and sleeping in there with him. It’s carpeted but small, otherwise it’s a very small bathroom. Worth considering for a few nights.
Thank you all again!

@JoyBee&Ravan any harm mixing the d-mannose with food and if that’s ok, is it ok with food with a phosphorus binder?

snuggie eats like a zillion times a day so most of his food has binder in it (not all - I know not ideal but he needs some meds without it so that’s the best we can do).

he eats willingly and just lapped this up mixed with chicken broth. Syringe feeding is out of the question (due to extreme fear, long story) unless an emergency.

It's best to give D mannose in water but you can add it to his wet food. 1/2 teaspoon D-Mannose mixed into one tablesoon of water. Once kitty stops peeing so much you just give a Maintanince dose 1 or 2 times a week.
There is canned food low in Phosphorus. Did you check out the "Food Chart ? Phosphorus binder contains Aluminum & too much can get toxic. What are Snuggies' Phos & Creatinine #'s ? Did you add his Lab results to his Spread Sheet?

Think of the SS ( spread sheet) like a puzzle. Little by little you want to fill in the times you haven't tested, A lot of Kitties go the lowest during the night. Ravan goes low at +6 to +8 You need to know what his BG is at all different hours.

This web site will give you a lot of info about Feline Kidney disease. https://www.felinecrf.org/phosphorus_binders.htm

I keep Ravan's wet food below 250 Phosphorus (Merricks Back Country Turkey 11% carbs 212 Phos. -- Merrick Limited ingredients Duck 15% carb 146 Phos. -- Soulistic Moist & Tender Turkey 6% carb 178 Phos. --- Wellness Pate Chicken 4% carb 218 Phos. Turkey 4% carb 200 Phos. Halo Impulse Rabbit 7% carbs 210 Phos. I refer to the Food Chart for this info. https://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

Are you going to the Lantus Levemir Forum ?

thanks! I’ll have him lap it up with broth and between meals.

Labs are on his spreadsheet. Latest phos was 6.7 (we got it down from over 15 woh just food change alone). I haven’t added his latest urinalysis - too busy cleaning up pee - sigh!

his foods are all approx 30% protein, 5% of cals carbs, phos (mg/kcal) 130-135 (or 0.7-0.8% dry matter basis).

@JoyBee&Ravan hey there! Question about d-mannose - So snuggie’s culture came back positive for E. coli / heavy growth, so he’s got something major going on. By your recommendation we are to go down to 1 dose 1x a day for one day tomorrow - but with something this major, do you have different advice for how much / how often?

1 dose 1x a day for one day tomorrow -
Is he still peeing out of the litter box? "E. coli, is a bacterium that normally resides in the lower intestines of most warm blooded mammals, including cats. Normally, the presence of E. coli is benign, and even beneficial, but in some cases it can cause a UTI"
Cats with Kidney disease or Diabetes are more prone to UTI's.

E. coli detect D-mannose and “grab on” to all the abundantly free-flowing D-mannose they can get. In the process, they detach themselves from the scarce D-mannose in the inner walls of the bladder, and begin floating about freely in the urine. When kitty urinates, out goes the E Coli"
The symptoms of feline urinary infections improve after only one day. This treatment may need to be repeated if the symptoms occur again or if they do not completely disappear after the first day."

In my opinion, Vets prescribe Antibiotic way too much! I always try something "Natural" first.
I avoid pharmaceuticals for myself & my animals.

I give D-mannose as I described. Other articles say one teaspoon every hour for one day. ( you can't overdose on D-Mannose )

@JoyBee&Ravan thank you! I did look it up to see how it worked -
Sounds super cool!

he isn’t going on the carpet anymore but could be the extra easy access boxes we put out where he was going, maybe it’s that stuff has kicked in.

glad to know you can’t OD on it - I may start back on the 3-2-1 plan just since this one is SO bad.

thanks!
