Use of Lantus $25 Perscription coupon

Oh dear... and I was headed to the pharmacy with my coupon tonight!! Guess I will wait to see responses to this question. I am fostering so if they honor the coupon, I told the rescue agency that I would cover it.

Vets can't take them but most pharmacies can....as Larry said, most vets don't have the appropriate registrations. I'd call first tho' just to be sure...

I used the $25 savings card in the past. I found a local pharmacy (a chain actually) that honored it. The name is Hometown Pharmacy and there are some here in Ohio. I had previously called the larger pharmacies--Walmart, Giant Eagle, RiteAid, CVS, Walgreens and K-Mart--none of who would honor it. One thing though: I could not get it refilled until it was due, down to the last drop; so if your cat's insulin dosage increases and/or you overdraw--you may have to pay full price the next time you need a pen....

I use it at Walmart. I only had to bring it in the one time (after I'd already purchased the pen at full price but within 30 days of receipt) and they gave me cash back for the already-bought pen and it's been automatically applied to the last two pens I've bought since then without me having to do anything except show up for my refill. This last time (last week), my vet wrote down "1 Lantus pen, Refills: 1" instead of "1 Lantus pen, Refills: 5" so they just called him for me and got another prescription for me and I still got the discount automatically applied. FYI, if you get your vet to write the prescription for one pen at a time, most pharmacies should sell you the pens individually (because you're not prescribed to receive more than one pen at a time ;-) ).

When I first signed up, the Walmart pharmacy did have to call my vet for a number (possibly NIB?). Not sure if he ever gave them one or if they just accepted it anyway. It's basically to confirm that it's a valid prescription and the patient is not covered by any other insurance or government program.

Before I even signed up for it, I called the manufacturer (there's a number for "eligibility") and asked them about it. They said that anyone who sells their product is supposed to honor the Savings Card because it's direct from the manufacturer (McKesson) for the product purchased, not the patient. That being said, they told me that some pharmacies might not honor it and some pharmacists might give you a hard time. It falls under their "LoyaltyScript" program's Terms & Conditions, so if a pharmacist doesn't belong to that is when you might run into some problems. In those instances, either find another pharmacy or have them call the "eligibility" number on the card (855-242-6944) to speak to the manufacturer directly.

That was about 6 months ago, so things might have changed recently, but it doesn't look like it (website and restrictions are all still the same as far as I can tell).

I was unable to use it at the Walmart pharmacy. The pharmacist had no problem trying to use it, but had to call the vet for his ID number. When they entered the vet's ID, they told me it kept coming back as invalid. Sounded like it was more of a problem on the manufacturers end. Called the number on the back of the Lantus coupon, and they said I was unable to use the coupon for animal's prescriptions. This was about a month ago that I tried to use the coupon.

Sounds like either things might have changed recently or there are some uninformed reps answering the phones. I'd give them a call to find out but they're already closed for today. If they changed their policy, I bet we could start a letter writing campaign to get them to give us pet owners some sort of special break. They're a small enough company that it might prove effective. (I'm assuming "small" since they're not open 24/7....)

I was able to use the Lantus coupon at Costco yesterday. They bent over backwards to get me the best price - even finagling a birthdate to age 18. They let me use my BF's Costco membership number. They were great! Five pens plus tax cost me $206.

From what you said, Cosco did not take the $25 saving card. Ut they did y would have to only pay $25 for the first sis prescriptions (I conclude each box of five pens is one precription)

Oh... I understood that it was $25 per pen. I saved the coupon I used on my work computer - I will check it tomorrow. I ended up paying about $38 per pen but I wasn't going to hassle with them because they were trying to figure out how to do it for a cat who also doesn't have a membership. They said the Lantus discount was more than their 5% discount so they used it instead. I will probably try Walmart next time.

I bought the pens at Walmart last month for $290.84, and then I signed up for and printed the coupon and took it back to Walmart to see if they would give me the discount. They gave me back $100, so I paid $190.84. I believe the coupon says you get a maximum benefit of $100. I ended up only needing to give my cat two shots total (she's OTJ now), so now I have a bunch of insulin just sitting in my refrigerator. I guess I'll have it if we need it again!

I have not been able to use it anywhere here. all were willing to use it, but were all told they could not if the prescriber did not have the needed id # (used to bill insurance companies). I finally called the number on the savings card- they were less than helpful. I explained my situation, and clearly stated the medicine was prescribed for use with a feline, and that vetrinarian's do no have the id number (used to bill insurance). I asked if they would help me figure out how to get the savings card processed.
He asked how much the pharmacy cost was. I advised him depending on the pharmacy between $290 and $340 for the solostar. He quickly said, well- it's still not going to be $25 because the card only takes $100 off the cash price.(the card does say this, pretty clearly. I was just hoping they would take the cost off the wholesale or insurance price- not the cash price)
I asked if i choose to go that route, how would the pharmacy process it. he responded "well- they need to call us to determine what error they are getting". I again advised him the pharmacist ( who was awesome by the way) knew the error: the vet does not have the requested ID number.
The help desk responce was "Well, if the prescriber does not have the ability to provide that number, then you can't use the card". I again reiterated that vets in general do not have that ability, and asked him to confirm that if this is the case that prescriptions for pet's are not eligible for the program. He confirmed and said that was the case.

I have successfully used the discount coupon at my Target pharmacy. They know it is for a cat, since the script is from my vet, and feline is written on it! I made my cat 18 years old (she is really only 15). I had to call the number on the card because it printed without the ID number on it. I spoke with a representative who asked me what kind of insulin "I" was currently using and I said Novolog 70/30. Just came in my head! Anyway, then he gave me the number to write on the coupon and I brought it in with the RX for the Lantus to Target. I purchased one pen for $25. Also, I registered with Lantus using my name and birthdate, but used Cleo's name and fake birthdate at the pharmacy, and it did not make any difference.

Hope this helps.

Target pharmacist told me that they sell individual pens to nursing homes, so feel they should offer the same convenience to regular customers.

Darnit! I wish Walmart would have done that for me.

I too had to make Snoball 18 years old and the pharmacist even wrote down the new "birthdate" for me so I can be consistent if I came back.

Thanks, Larry. I never noticed that: "Card carries a maximum benefit of $100 per prescription for up to 6 prescriptions (maximum of $600) for the duration of this program."

On my Savings Card from when I signed up for it back in March it says, "Pay no more than $25 for Lantus Solostar," which is where I got the impression (math-wise) that if the pen costs $60, you only get 6 pens at that $25 price. I'm now wondering, however, what they consider a "prescription" because I got the two pens on my previous prescription (for 2 pens) at $25 a piece and now I'm wondering if I'll only get two pens on my new prescription (for 5 pens) at that $25 price before I have to pay full price for the remaining three till my next prescription? (I'm guessing Walmart sells the pens individually at <$50 in order for me to have gotten two pens on the same prescription at the discounted price.)

Michelangelo is in Walmart's database with his actual birth date, but they have me listed as his guardian/care giver. ;-)

Is Michelangelo a foster? (love that name  )

The prescription had the owner of the rescue agency on it instead of mine so it got complicated.

Where do you get your ID number from? I registered Izzy and it let me print a card, but there is no ID. it says I should have a 9 digit number but there is none. Do they mail that to you?

Thankfully they never asked me for an ID number. It looked as if they immediately knew that this was to be handled differently. I even said to my BF that they must be pet lovers.

No, Michelangelo was a feral kitten rescue. ;-) It was simply the workaround the pharmacy did for him being underage; they assigned me as his primary caregiver/guardian so I could pick up the drugs "for" him.

It should appear on the card under the RxBIN, RxPCN, RxGRP, ISSUER sections. If not, try calling them directly or see if it lets you register again.

I tried to use the coupon today at Costco - didn't work.
They ran it but said they needed an id number which vets don't have.

I have found a local, small pharmacy which will sell 1 pen for $70.

I had to call the number on the card to get an ID number. I spoke with a young man, he asked me a couple of questions (who is this for: human me) Was I currently using a different insulin - you can just say you are newly diagnosed; name, birthdate, etc. I gave him all MY info, and he gave me the number. I gave pharmacy Cleo's info with a birthdate making her 18 y/o. And it all went through fine.

All the pharmacies i have called say they dont sell single pens. If i have the vet write one pen with 5 refills ... do you think the pharmacy can or will run it as a single precription?

That's what worked for me at Walmart. Try some of the bigger pharmacies because they're a lot more likely to think nothing of splitting up a box vs. smaller pharmacies might be more worried about who will buy the other 4 pens individually.

No I have called Costco, Target, Walmart, Walgreens and Rite Aid. All have said no single pens only a full box. I just don't want to have to go back to the get a new prescription and was wondering if they could sell all 5 if it was written... Refill 5

So, finally got a result.

I went to a nearby Target who applied the coupon.
However, they said that as the vet didn't have a ??number, they had used one that belonged to another doctor - very nice of them.

It lowered the price for 5 pens to $225.

But I then found out that a different Target would sell individual pens for $61 each.
The Target I was at couldn't because they didn't have a chief pharmacist and so didn't have anyone who could override the set process/policies and split a box.

The other Target said that they already had a box open and could sell me just the 1 pen.
