I use it at Walmart. I only had to bring it in the one time (after I'd already purchased the pen at full price but within 30 days of receipt) and they gave me cash back for the already-bought pen and it's been automatically applied to the last two pens I've bought since then without me having to do anything except show up for my refill. This last time (last week), my vet wrote down "1 Lantus pen, Refills: 1" instead of "1 Lantus pen, Refills: 5" so they just called him for me and got another prescription for me and I still got the discount automatically applied. FYI, if you get your vet to write the prescription for
one pen at a time, most pharmacies should sell you the pens individually (because you're not prescribed to receive more than one pen at a time ;-) ).
When I first signed up, the Walmart pharmacy did have to call my vet for a number (possibly NIB?). Not sure if he ever gave them one or if they just accepted it anyway. It's basically to confirm that it's a valid prescription and the patient is not covered by any other insurance or government program.
Before I even signed up for it, I called the manufacturer (there's a number for "eligibility") and asked them about it. They said that anyone who sells their product is
supposed to honor the Savings Card because it's direct from the manufacturer (McKesson) for the
product purchased, not the patient. That being said, they told me that some pharmacies might not honor it and some pharmacists might give you a hard time. It falls under their "
LoyaltyScript" program's
Terms & Conditions, so if a pharmacist doesn't belong to that is when you might run into some problems. In those instances, either find another pharmacy or have them call the "eligibility" number on the card (855-242-6944) to speak to the manufacturer directly.
That was about 6 months ago, so things might have changed recently, but it doesn't look like it (website and restrictions are all still the same as far as I can tell).
