Update on cat swapped to Lantus

Hi everyone,

I posted a week ago about my cat, he was on Caninsulin until last Thursday. It’s been a week on Lantus and while his numbers have been all over the place he’s been trending downwards!

Increasing his dose twice first from 2.5 units - 2.75 units - 3 units.

Today after his breakfast we took his glucose, morning pre shot number was 16 mmol - dosing at 3 units. At 4:38pm he was sitting at 7.5 mmol. At pm dose he tests at 6.6 mmol. We know that his numbers will fluctuate and read that Lantus is best if slightly overdosing for the first 2 months.

I’m looking for some clarification on if I should be reducing or holding the dose at 3 units even if lower testing numbers.

How should I be adjusting his dose based on new lower numbers?

Hi there, I highly recommend you start tracking the numbers on a spreadsheet and pick a dosing method like SLGS or TR. The dosing methods help guide increases or decreases, and you can also post over on the Lantus board with daily numbers for additional help from the Lantus gurus there. It is a fantastic resource!!

I went with TR and we got my boy Hendrick to diabetic remission because of it. Lantus is what we used as well! Good luck.

Check out the dosing methods here: Sticky - Dosing Methods: Start Low, Go Slow (SLGS) & Tight Regulation (TR)

Like suggested above, we use a spreadsheet to help us track progress. The information on setting up a spreadsheet for your cat is in this post on helping us to help you. There's also information on how to set up your signature in the same post.
