I just received a phone call from Marje (Marje and Grace) and she asked me to post for her. Her 16-year-old baby, Teddi, is on her way from her normal vet's office to the emergency vet's. She's in critical condition. She has fluid in her abdomen and they don't know what is going on. Her white blood cell count is three times normal. She's been vomiting. Marje is so upset. She wants everyone to know that Grace is doing great, though, cruising around in the blues and Gus is much better today from his swollen jaw caused by his dental a couple days ago.

Please PRAY for Teddi and for Marje and keep them in your thoughts today!!

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

Thank you all so much...I read your posts from my phone and it is a great comfort. You all are amazing....your wonderful posts brought tears to my eyes...I know we can count on you all and the power of your prayers.

Teddi is at the ER and the critical care specialist is doing an U/S on her now and they are going to get some of the fluid out of her abdomen and see what is going on. She said it's good that Teddi has been having normal poos (even last night) but that she has alot of gas in her stomach....she isn't sure how much fluid until they do the U/S. They would not let me go back with her and I was worried about Gracie so we ran home to check her and are headed back in just a few minutes. Teddi seemed much better last evening but then started throwing up during the night and this morning her belly was distended. She did let me syringe feed her 6 mls twice and had kept it down.

Does anyone know anything about this new, long-lasting bupe? One shot lasts three days? I told her I am always hesitant to have my cats have something that stays in their system. She says they have not had any problems with it. The reason it is good, she says, is because if a cat doesn't want to eat and you are giving the bupe orally, the bad taste of it can keep them from wanting to start eating. I have not experienced that with my cats before. She also said that she thinks it might be better to keep Teddi there on IV fluids but I know Teddi will not be happy there. She said they also think that a cat being syringe fed is less likely to start eating on her own. I said "but if you try to get her to eat here and she doesn't, then she gets no food...only IV. I've always syringe fed my cats through illnesses and not one has refused to go back to eating on its own". Does anyone know if there have been issues with cats not eating on their own after being assist fed for a while? We might consider letting her stay one night to get stabilized but then I want her home where she can sleep comfortably.

I'll keep you all or Patty posted. I can do posts from my phone but I may just call Patty. Thank you all again....LL has the BEST miracles. Thank you for praying for our girl.

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

marjorie, i don't know a thing, but her comments about coming off of syringe feeding don't jive with what people here have experienced. i would think getting the food in her is the critical point - how it gets there is less important than that it does get there.

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

I'm afraid I'm no help on the medicine but it sure seems there is lots of evidence here on FDMB to support kitties being syringe fed and then eating on their own. We are sending lots of healing vines down the hill from Flagstaff. If there is anything we can do from 5 hours north please let us know. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

Oh my gosh, just seeing this now Marje. Prayers and healing vines for Teddi and for you and Mike, too! I know how much you both love all your furkids. Praying for a miracle and hope you get some info about the long acting Bupe. Lots of hugs.

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

Marje:

Remind the vet that you know how to give an injection. Bupe (the regular kind) can be given by sub-q injection. The first time I used bupe, the vet gave me syringes and a vial because I knew how to shoot. (It made so much sense given that Gabby had extractions and didn't want to be banging into sore gums to give oral bupe.)

You are all in my thoughts.

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

Marj - Thank you for the update. I know Tarragon would not eat at all in the hospital. I agree with you that Teddi is more likely to start eating after being syringe fed at home than at the hospital, where she probably will not eat anything at all. I know there are tons on this board who have syringe fed at home (including you) and had them start eating on their own.

Still praying for all of you. Hang in there!!

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

Even if I have to just tinkle, I'll take my phone with me in case you call!!! I hope Teddi gets to come home SOON!!!

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

marje, i haven't heard of this new 3 day bupe shot, but if it's Bu p r e n o r p h i n e S R™ i found this:

http://www.wildpharm.com/documents/Buprenorphine_info_sheet.pdf

i'd hesitate to give it for the same reasons you have concerns... once the shot is given it lasts for 3 days and you can't take it out of the cat.

sienne's right. the bupe we're familiar with can be shot sub-q. sounds like a safer route to me.

hugs and prayers...

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

Marje its rare that a vets office will assist feed. Crazy huh. That is a myth that Teddi will not eat if she's syringe fed. There are two thoughts though - syringe feeding while not addressing nausea can lead to food aversion in general. In cases where nausea may be present - CRF, pancreatitis and especially liver disease. This is why I get on my soap box and recommend anyone considering an appetite stimulant to make sure nausea is addressed. Also we recommend syringe feeding a food that they do not normally eat. So the association isn't made to their existing foods. There were only a few cats that needed assist feeding for years. Even in cats that have food aversion its only a matter of a couple of months. Some cats though deal with chronic illnesses and need assist feeding through their periods of inappetance. FHL can hit extremely fast in some cats with zero calories and often for other cats after a period of too little calories.

I read your post and my heart was pounding. You have the power of Lantus Land hugs, prayers, vines, snowflakes and wishes behind you and Teddi. I am wishing they find out what is wrong, fix her all up and send her home all better. Sending you hugs.

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

I think that your concerns about the Buprenorphine SR (sustained release) are valid. I found one mention of it here on the board. WCF and Meowzi (who were also commenting on the sterility issues of injected buprenorphine) reported that her vet "is not comfortable using SR (as opposed to the conventional buprenex) in cats; he was aware that some veterinarians had resorted to using that during the period when there was a shortage of the conventional buprenex in the market but he doesn't think it's been tested for safety and dosing in cats." http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=33362&p=348099

As far as I know, Buprenex is flavorless, so there should be no aversion due to bad tatse.

I am not an expert in assist feeding. I think that again, your instincts are on target. You do want to keep the cat's strength up and prevent hepatic lipidosis. I think I recall reading a suggestion that a cat not be assist fed its normal/favorite food, in case any aversion does develop to that particular flavor being syringed.

I am continuing to send many healing vines and prayers.

Re: MARJE'S TEDDI NEEDS PRAYERS DESPERATELY!!!

Tons of thoughts and prayers coming your way.

As for the long lasting bupe......I have a friend who is using it with great success with her kitty that has severe IBD and chronic pancreatitis (as well as diabetes and asthma). She has been using it for 3 months and it has helped kitty a lot.....kept her relatively pain free and increased her quality of life.

I just heard from Marje. The vet has just told her that, in looking at the ultrasound, in her experience it looks like stomach cancer. Her second guess would be lyphoma. She said it also looks like the small intestine has been affected. They're going to do a needle biopsy on the stomach lining and hope they can make a diagnosis that way because performing an open biopsy on a 16-year-old cat isn't a great thing to do. Marje is going to leave Teddi overnight, possibly getting the first treatment. I'm crossing my fingers that the vet is wrong. Until I hear a definitive diagnosis, I'm just praying, praying, praying that the vet is wrong. Come on, LL peeps, PRAY REALLY HARD THAT THE VET IS WRONG!!!!

ETA: Almost forgot....Marje wants to thank everyone for all your support!!!! She is so very appreciative for your outpouring of support and prayers!!!
