We spent last night at the emergency vets office. Spicoli went out after his morning feeding and didn't come back for 8 hours, which is very unusual. I figured he went out, it got really hot, he found shade and stayed there till the sun started to set.

When he finally decided to come home he just laid in the floor at his water bowl lapping and lapping. Offered food but he wouldn't eat. I tried getting him up by gently pushing his hind quarters while he was laying down but he would only take a few steps and lay right back down. So off to the vet we went.

We did a blood panel and his WBC count was up so we started him on antibiotics. His bladder was empty so they couldn't test for urinary tract infection. He was also severely dehydrated so he was given 300 ml of subq fluids. Since he seemed to be in a bit of discomfort the vet gave him some pain meds and sent some home with us. His physical exam other than the dehydration was normal.

He's eating well today and seems to be doing MUCH better and really just acting like his normal needy self. He has had a UTI before but that was 7-8 years ago. I have no experience with dehydration on that level. So my question is should I try and take him in in a day or 2 to have this rechecked? Or sooner? They said there was no need as long as I saw improvement.

I have no answer myself besides an underlying infection / virus, since it seems he was just dehydrated with higher WBC, so I went and did my thing :bookworm::bookworm::bookworm:

Couple kitties sounded like similar symptoms. A few later in the thread seemed to be helped by the antibiotics.

Glad he is feeling better :bighug:

THats a lot of fluids all at once.

Has he been peeing more? May be a UTI... Diabetic cats are more prone to them.

He went out to potty after our morning feeding, but I don't think he's gone again since. It's rained all day and he will usually either hold it till he has to use the litter box or wait for the rain to stop. Litter boxes are super clean and there are multiple ones around. I was leaning towards a UTI since he's been grooming his downstairs a good bit. But he loves to groom himself... He's been eating wet food (like usual) all day and has down about 1 1/2 cans and seems to be drinking well. He still seems a little uncomfortable at times, but overall I'd say 80-90% improved. He's only had 2 doses of doxycycline so far so I'd like to give the meds time to do their thing before taking him back in, unless of course he needs to go. He could still be a little dehydrated but his skin turgor is good now. Think I will try adding some water to his food this evening and see if that helps.

I add at least a tbsp of warm water to every meal, for all my cats. I really think it helps! :cat:

He's up and running full speed tonight :) Added between 1/4 and 1/2 cup of water to this evenings feeding. Seemed to make a fairly noticeable difference. Since this dehydration experience I have a few questions.

Can I keep fluids from my vet at home?
How long would they keep?

I feel like I would have no problem giving them to him and would like to keep some on hand just in case unless that's a bad idea. The $330 vet bill from last night just...blah...

Little update. We went back to the vet again today... Still a little dehydrated so more fluids were given - 125ml. Think it may be time to invest in a water fountain.

Some kitties do prefer the running water. Just make sure if you get a fountain you do clean it because they can get fur (especially long haired kitties) and a slimey build up. Like fish tank filter pump things. Such professional terms
