We spent last night at the emergency vets office. Spicoli went out after his morning feeding and didn't come back for 8 hours, which is very unusual. I figured he went out, it got really hot, he found shade and stayed there till the sun started to set.
When he finally decided to come home he just laid in the floor at his water bowl lapping and lapping. Offered food but he wouldn't eat. I tried getting him up by gently pushing his hind quarters while he was laying down but he would only take a few steps and lay right back down. So off to the vet we went.
We did a blood panel and his WBC count was up so we started him on antibiotics. His bladder was empty so they couldn't test for urinary tract infection. He was also severely dehydrated so he was given 300 ml of subq fluids. Since he seemed to be in a bit of discomfort the vet gave him some pain meds and sent some home with us. His physical exam other than the dehydration was normal.
He's eating well today and seems to be doing MUCH better and really just acting like his normal needy self. He has had a UTI before but that was 7-8 years ago. I have no experience with dehydration on that level. So my question is should I try and take him in in a day or 2 to have this rechecked? Or sooner? They said there was no need as long as I saw improvement.
