I am going to the local drug store today to see about the u-100 syringes. Is there any type of markings or codes that I need to make sure are on the package? I will ask for the half unit markings.

I believe I understand the conversion... I just have a question on the shot with the half markings... it looks like it starts off at .5 as the first mark then goes 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and so on up to 5 units. Is this correct? 5 units is equal to 2 units of u-40 insulin. I am giving catee 1.75 so I would need to be about on the 4.0 marking on the u-100... is this correct?

Also I read on another site showing up close images of the shots that the needles are thinner but are easier to bend. Has anyone encountered this? Are they shorter than the U-40? I want to avoid fur shots but I do want the shot to get in there.

Sorry for so many questions but I want to make sure I get the right shots and know before his PM shot today.

This thread talks about what to buy and where. There are pictures down the thread.

On the conversion chart. 1.6 of U40 would equal 4U on a U100 needles. To give 1.8 of the insulin, you'd draw up 4.5. There is no way to do exactly 1.75. So I'd say either pick a tiny bit more or a tiny bit less.

I saw where someone made a collar for a cat who was difficult to shoot. They used a large paper cup and took out the bottom, then slipped it over the cat's head. (I would think you could open up the side so you could just slip it on. Then give him something he likes to eat and sit beside him, petting him and talking. Then shoot and he shouldn't be able to see you with the needle?

To adjust the markings on a U-100 syringe for a U-40 insulin, you multiply by 0.4.
Short version: every 0.5 unit marking measures 0.2 units of U-40.

Conversion table with the math:
0.4 * U-100 syringe marking = U-40 dose
0.4 * 0.5 U-100 syringe mark = 0.2 units of U-40
0.4 * 1.0 U-100 syringe mark = 0.4
0.4 * 1.5 U-100 syringe mark = 0.6
0.4 * 2.0 U-100 syringe mark = 0.8
0.4 * 2.5 U-100 syringe mark = 1.0
0.4 * 3.0 U-100 syringe mark = 1.2
0.4 * 3.5 U-100 syringe mark = 1.4
0.4 * 4.0 U-100 syringe mark = 1.6
0.4 * 4.5 U-100 syringe mark = 1.8
0.4 * 5.0 U-100 syringe mark = 2.0

Thank you for the links. The local drug store did not have the one with the half marks on it. They did give one to me to try... the needle is a lot shorter than the U-40. Anyone every have problems with it? Nearly seems to short.
I will have to go to Walmart to get the half mark shots.

With that said I was able to give him the shot today with U-40 while he was eating a treat.

The 3/10 cc U-100 syringes come in both long and short needles. Personally, I prefer the short needle as I'm less likely to bend it or stab myself. Others prefer the longer needle. Its a choice, not a mandate!

I got some of the U-100 needles without the half markings at a local drugstore. I've used them the past two shots and it has been easier giving the shots. I believe the needle does not hurt as much.

With that said, I can not tell if the needle is going in. With the U-40 I could feel it going in, with the U-100 short needle I can not feel it. Now I wasn't at home this morning to test nadir. I will tonight though.

He did give a little meow when I gave it to him so I think it went in, did not feel any wet fur. Has anyone else had problems with the short needles?

Try parting the fur or shaving a small area so you can see.

I've gotten to the point I don't really need to see it. I can feel it go in, even with the short needle. Its a more subtle feeling than when using the longer, thicker needles.

BJM, do you use the tent method? That is how I do it.

I gave him his shot this morning. He didn't jump or anything when I put it in. I injected and pulled the shot out... while pulling out it tugged the skin back with it a little. I leaned down and could smell insulin but did not feel anything. I did feel the needle go in and hopefully the insulin go in there.
Last night's +6 was 211 which is a little higher than usual. He did not eat much Friday or Saturday so I cut down on the dosage. I am now going back up. I believe I threw him off with the two fur shots in a row plus a vet trip.

I do tent the skin; I don't even bother looking for it. I just feel it when the syringe enters.
