maybe I went more for musicianship rather than flash -- mostly big band, early jazz, and light classical played around our house, then I was allowed to listen to the radio at bedtime, mostly 50s ballads (Wayward Wind, Ramblin' Rose, etc); later my cousin, eight years older, introduced me to folk music (Kingston Trio, Limelighters, Brothers 4, etc)
listened more to Glenn Yarbrough than John Denver .. just loved Chad Mitchell Trio
college concerts (no screaming!) -- Harry Belafonte, Herb Alpert, Judy Collins
I went to school with Lynn Anderson ("Rose Garden", etc), was in chorus with her Mrs. Phillips made us both lip-synch -- Lynn because she "didn't blend" and me because my voice was changing, no longer a soprano but couldn't "hear" the alto line after all the years I'd been singing in church choirs
