Hey there

I used this forum years ago and I remember there were a few others from my area. I’m hoping they’re still here as I am in desperate need of information on boarding a diabetic cat for a week in New Westminster (or anywhere accessible by transit)

Evidently all of the vet clinics that offer cat boarding in New West/Burnaby have a new policy against boarding diabetics, since they would be required to be there longer than 8 hours.

How do you all find a way to leave for a few days? I haven’t been able to go anywhere for years. Can’t even go out in the evening because I have to be home at a certain time every day.

The other option I guess would be to take him with me, but he can barely handle a bus ride so I doubt he’d handle a plane ride very well and I don’t want him to have a heart attack.

What to do?

I would change your subject line to say the area you live in to alert people.
Can you get a pet sitter to come in and either stay or come in twice a day?

Lower mainland BC is the area.

Would it be safe to have a pet sitter drop in to give him his dose? The vets won’t take him because they say he needs monitoring for several hours after each dose, and they are open that long.

No I don’t, but I can get one.
A timed feeder allows you to set the times of when you want the snacks to be given. Do you think your kitty would eat from a timed feeder?
When I first got mine, I fed Sheba all her meals from it in the beginning so she got used to the fact the feeder meant food.
We also recommend giving a 'vacation dose' when you go away. That is a dose slightly less than what you normally give in case the cat wont eat and if the pet sitter can't test.

I have a petsitter that gives shots, but New West is too far for her. Check at the vets to see if they have staff who have a side business of petsitting. Or if they have a notice board where people leave petsitter business cards. I had a friend who went to England for a month and a vet staff came in twice a day to do the shots for his diabetic cat. That was on the North Shore, so too far for you, but there should be something similar where you are.
