Last week I brought Trink in for her yearly rabies shot; this is the first one she's had with me-her other one she got as a baby before I adopted her. When we got home a little while after she went in the litterbox and threw up a ton and never went to the bathroom. There was a hair ball in her puke, so throwing up may or may not be part of this reaction, but usually she doesn't throw up that much with a hair ball. Later I smelled an awful smell and Dave and I went looking around the house for the source. Dave found a pile of poop in my bedroom on the FLOOR that looked like it was left by a huge dog. It was SO weird!!! She's NEVER done anything like this!!!

The main symptoms were increased respirations and continuous shaking of her paws and chewing/biting at them. She's never done this before. It was really weird to see. She also couldn't settle down for about 6 hours after. She was very restless. By the next morning thankfully the symptoms had passed. I called the vet to tell her what happened and she said it did indeed sound like a reaction and that she would report it to PureVax. She also said Trinket wouldn't need to get the vax anymore which I am very happy about. She's an indoor cat so there shouldn't be an issue hopefully.
Did this ever happen to anyone else?

Traci,

I am very glad to hear Trinket had recovered. How terrible. I never did see the reasoning for getting indoor only cats all these vaccines. Many years ago I had a cat named Alex. I took her to the vet to get her yearly shots. She stopped eating shortly thereafter, a day or two. Took her back to the vet they gave her a bunch of medicines, well she never did start eating again and died at the ER vet.
I was devastated. So ,now I do not take my cats to get their shots. My one is 15 and frankly he is to old. The other one is 3 and she does not go outside.
Hope Merlin is doing well. Miss seeing Trinket and Merlin pictures.

A few cat do have reactions to vaccines including the rabies one.
In some states the law is that cats and dogs have to have rabies vaccines and a vet can't decide that one is not required. Some states allow a vet to do that. The problem is that if your animal is not vaccinated as required by law and you animal bites someone, the animal may have to be quarantined at some place other than your home. If your vet decided that the animal should not be vaccinated you likely would not be prosecuted for not having your animal vaccinated..

Terri-
That's a HORRIBLE story!!! I am SO sorry about Alex. Having pets can break your heart at times. I can see why you don't want to get their shots. I get them distemper and I think it's every 3 or 4 years. Mer will be going in for his annual next month. He's never had a reaction. Let's hope it stays that way. nailbite_smile
I tried to upload pics of them last week and even made the pics smaller and I could get them attached so I gave up. :-x

Hi Larry-
My state is is one that the vaccine is required by law. The vet said she'd put a note in her file on Trinket that says no vaccine. She didn't say much more about it. I've heard of the quaratine. My friend has a dog in the same boat - also in MA. She doesn't get her dog vaccinated becauae he gets horribly ill and it took her a year to get the proper paperwork to "excuse" her dog from the shot. I'd be more scared in her situation because the dog DOES go outside and he's a French bulldog and she said he's nipped at people who approach him that he doesn't know.

I am sure you were very worried when this happened, and rightly so. My civie, Phoebe, had a vaccine reaction before. Her face almost immediately swelled up so I took her back to the vet and she got a shot of benadryl. I also lost my Remi to the worst kind of vaccine reaction, VAS (vaccine associated sarcoma) so I opt not to get vaccines for mine anymore, and yes it is the law here to to have them. Mine are all indoor. Glad your vet is understanding of the situation.

I am so sorry to hear what happened to Remi. What kind of vaccine was it that gave her the VAS?

We aren't sure. Any of them can cause it, pure vax is less likely. And it can show up years later. He was not vaccinated according to vaccination protocol so I will never know. The protocol is to give the rabies vax in the right rear limb and the leukemia one in the left rear leg. Remi's VAS showed up on his flank.

You may, in some cases, do a titer for the antibodies and use that to show the animal cannot be infected.

The cost for a titer may be higher than the vaccine, however, and unless you get it inot state/county/city law, may not be sufficient if a bite happens.
