Trial remission BG's

Jake is now in his fifth day of no insulin. The highest number he has during this period is 157 which was early this morning. I tested him again 3 hours later after feeding him, and his BG is now 63. So yes, his pancreas is working, but I did not expect the drop in BG to be that significant. Is this big of a drop normal in a cat that is in trial remission coming off Lantus?

Thanks,
Judy & Jake

Dear D and Noisy,

Thanks for the remission link. I checked out Harley's spreadsheet and saw that he had an especially significant drop in BG after eating in his remission trial. His drop was more extreme than Jake's. It does not appear to have caused Harley any problems or Jake either, for that matter. I was just wondering if a big drop like that is usual and/or is there anything to watch for or be aware of when the numbers drop that much and that fast after eating.

It isn't typical but to my knowledge there is no problem with a drop like that with no juice on board. Are you feeding low carb foods? You definitely want to keep him on low carb (LC) food. Are they big meals? Big meals might cause a higher number. Also, smaller meals are easier on the newly functioning pancreas -- pancreas doesn't have to work so hard if meals are small.

D, how do we get on that list? I had a conversation with Steve and Blue, who mentioned it would be helpful if OTJ kitties kept their spreadsheets up to date, to help the trial and newly OTJ beans know what's normal. I will do that! :-D

I absolutely keep Jake on low carb foods! I also feed him several times per day for the purposes of keeping his blood sugar more level.

Paige had mentioned earlier that trial kitties can get into low numbers like 40s and 50s, but significant drops from one number to another like the one this morning were not brought up. So I am going to have to assume that the significant drop is nothing to worry about.

We are entering day 6 of our remission trial - so far, so good - PAWS CROSSED!

Kathy, We are looking for someone to update the OTJ SSs. Cyncyn and D and Shadow used to do them, I don't know how to do them but we can ask Cyncyn next time she pops in. I would love to have that list updated as well as getting the current Lantus kitties into the list. (this is the "current" list that needs updating http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= ... WKzukx_dHQ)

I volunteer, D, though I'll need a little instruction.

Judy, sorry to hijack your discussion. All fingers and paws crossed for Jake!

Wow Judy that is quite a drop Jake gave you. But it is good :thumbup

Do you happen to have a spreadsheet that we could take a look at?

Keep up the good work you two.

I had made a spread sheet a couple of months ago, but could never figure out how to upload it! I can get to the SS itself and put in the current and recent information easy enough, but from thereon in, it is going to probably take me a while before I give up again. I will try my best though because I know it will be helpful.

Thanks, Paige, for your reassurance about the big drop being a good thing. Maybe that means Jake's remission numbers will be on the lower side rather than high side. Did I tell you he turned 18 on Saturday? And very healthy to boot for an older gentleman!

Just an update - we are now halfway through the 2 week remission trial with no insulin! Today's BGs = 7:00 am/142;
Post 3 - 10:00 a.m./83 ; and 7:00 pm/75! A little bit lower than yesterday's!

something you can try to see if it will bring down that AM number is to try feeding a small snack around 3 hours prior to that test. Of course that's the middle of the night, so a timed feeder would make that a lot easier. ;-) A lot of cats here have had success with that +9 snack when their AM number has stayed high. The idea is that the food should stimulate the pancreas, so maybe it's too hard on his pancreas to go all night without a snack.

Ah Libby, just what I was going to suggest. Glad to know I am thinking like you ;-)

Thanks for the update Judy. Give Jake a kiss for me and Webber.

Jake says thanks - he loves kisses on the top of his head. He always comes up to me and tips his head in hopes of getting one - which of course he always does.

The late night/early morning snack trick worked very well for his BG reading this morning which was 92 - way down from 142 and 157. Actually he typically has food overnight. I had kind of wondered why last Friday morning and Saturday morning he had BGs of 57 and 68, respectively, and that on the recent days they had these higher readings. After you guys brought up the late night/early morning snack, it dawned on me that the past few days he had eaten most of his calorie quota during the daytimes so I did not give him much for overnight - thus, he probably did not have an early morning snack when he got those higher numbers. So last night I made sure he had extra - and voila! He can stand to gain a few pounds anyway and after he does, I can merely space out the food a little bit better so that early morning snacks are there! And this way with a green number, I don't have to test him again until tonight! As always, thank you for your VERY helpful suggestions. It is now day 7 with no insulin!!!
