Hi last night Trey was 138/7.7 at 12am so Monday morning it is 7am and he is 165/ 9.2 so we gave him 1 unit I am now waiting to talk to the vet see what they will tell me. Tomorrow we will do a curve ... back later thank you all Kath & Trey

Awesome news! Now just to let the dose settle in with Trey, and any increases can be done smoothly and evenly, so missing what is the perfect dose for Trey!
Those yellows are looking mighty fine too!
Remember who is in charge here ;-) Let Trey's numbers guide you because they don't lie.
Looking forward to seeing the next curve for Trey.

Well tonight 7pm not so good 333/18.5BG we gave him only 1 unit see what happens we will check tonight at 12am. Talk to vet tech and she said do what we are feel and call tomorrow and let her know what happens. so hoping he is a bit lower then. Thanks will try to get profile done Kath & Trey

Hello Kath in PEI!
Here's Helene from ON!

Welcome to lantus land!
I had a look at your SS and I see dose hopping  . Please have a look at the stickies at the top of the page including the one with the protocol. I suggest that you select a dose (say 1 unit) to start and that you stick to it for now. Lantus thrives and likes consistent dose, shots, dosing time, food, etc... If you start monkeying around with everything... we'll be all confused, kwim?

Also ... one last thing for today, I'm sure you think your vet and or vet tech is fabulous... however, just so you know most vetbeans are not well experienced in lantus and often do not give the best advice. The insulin they are used to doesn't work at all the same as lantus. I mean that with all due respect of course. Look around at the different spreadsheets on this board and take in all the expertise on this insulin.

Again, welcome!

Hi Kath,
I am not the best at reading and figuring out the ss, but one thing you can adjust is the amps is actually blue. Now with that blue amps, you could be seeing a bounce with that pmps. Trey was high, then dropped low, and then bounced high by the time you tested at pmps. That's why it was suggested to lower the dose.
Think of a rubber ball. Take the ball and pound it down into the ground. What happens? The ball soars very high, then comes crashing down into the ground and then back up again and back down again.
Now think of skipping a stone across the surface of some water, a lake or something. There are only very little bounces up as it skips over the water.

You want to get like that stone, but you have been like that ball.

Now, with Lantus there is the shed to keep in mind. With all of the 3units you had been giving Trey, there was a 3unit shed there so when you went down to 1 unit, you still had that shed that had to be emptied. That's why you will not see how Trey will do on just 1 unit until the extra has been drained from the shed, or used up. If you stay on the 1unit for 6 cycles (6 shots) you will give Trey a chance to adjust to the new lower dose and he will have dumped all the extra insulin in the shed.

Be sure to get a test just before you head to bed each nite, and any other tests that you can because there is no such thing as too much data! What you are looking to see is a curve that is not as extreme as you have been getting. There are some kitties who take the whole 6 cycles to settle into the new dose so give Trey some time.

So far so good; you're doing a great job and the ss looks quite nice.

Pats and scratches for Trey.

Talk to our vet today she maybe upset with us wanted to keep giving him 3 units every 12 hour will remember at least 3 day of same amounts of units thanks Trey says thanks for pat and he sends some back kitty hugs LOL Kath & Trey

Hi Kath,
You need to start a new topic for each day. This one is for yesterday.

I looked at your ss and you have posted that you gave 2units this am?
You must stick with the same dose with Lantus because of the shed needs, so jumping from 3u down to 1u, and then up to 2u is not good for Trey at all.

About your vet being upset, I would be upset if my vet because 3u looks to be too much insulin. What did your vet say about all the highs and lows? Is your vet the only one you can use for Trey? What about getting a 2nd opinion from another vet?

Remember: Trey is YOUR cat and your vet is to provide you with service. What if you knew that a med was harmful to cats and your vet wanted to give that med to Trey? Would you just say OK? No! You would say that will harm Trey so don't give that to Trey.

The same should apply to this situation. The vet may well be telling you to give too much insulin and overdosing Trey. There is nothing wrong at all with giving 1unit Lantus for 6 consecutive shots to let the dose settle with Trey and to see if you can get a more even, flatter, milder curve.

Then after the 6 shots, you can decide what is needed. The protocol used here:
Tight Protocol

Your vet may be upset, but I bet your vet does not know enough about FD because a dose of 3u is too high as a starting dose for any cat. There are some cats who never need that much, ever. Normal starting dose for most cats are usually 1unit BID or even maybe 0.5unit BID, but never 3units.

it's ultimately up to you what you do for Trey, but I would say that you need to give the 1unit a chance to settle and work for Trey.

Please let us know if you gave 2units this morning or meant to enter 1unit into the amps field on the ss.
