? Tresaderm and steriod induced diabetes?

Nikko was treated for a ear infection with Tresaderm about two months ago and then was diagnosed with diabetes. His sugar had gotten into the 500's and also had high ketone levels about two weeks after completing the two week prescription of Tresaderm. Did some digging on site and have found a correlation between the two....

Treated his diabetes for about a week with 2 units twice a day for 10 days or so and his BGs dropped below 200s...so discontinued insulin....He has been OTJ for almost 3 weeks with BGs dropping steadily down to under 100s for the last 10 days...YEAH!!!!! His "ear infection" seemed to have returned in the opposite ear....so....decided to give him drops and keep an eye on his BGs......Well tonight after 3 treatments they have jumped back up to 171.....

I have discontinued the drops and give the vet a call tomorrow....any thoughts?

I have found that Tresaderm contains the steroid-Dexamethasone, which I understand may cause steroid induced diabetes in both humans and cats....thinking that Nikko may be an example of this side effect.....hopefully his BGs will start to go down.....thoughts?

Looking for some insight to share with the vet.....and if there are any non-steroid treatment for his ear infection.....

My non-diabetic cat, Orpheus, had to be treated with ear drops recently that contained a steroid. At the same time we started the drops, Bandit's BG suddenly started spiking and we couldn't figure it out....until we caught Bandit grooming Orpheus's head. I would imagine that if his BG was fine and you started the drops and his blood sugar suddently spikes, then it is probably the drops.

BG can also spike because of the infection--but if the BG didn't go up until AFTER you had been giving the treatment for 3 days, I would say the drops are probably the culprit.

Can you ask your vet for some non-steroidal drops to help treat his ears? That may be the best solution.

Thanks for your insight and share your example with the vet....I will continue to monitor his BG and hopefully we have found the culprit of his sugar issues....fingers and paws crossed that it could be this "easy"!!!!!

Thank goodness I am home testing to be able to see the possible problem!!!!! Diabetes comes in many forms indeed.......

There is Baytril Otic which is marketed for dogs. It is a good antibiotic.
You can get anti-fungals like Cononfite. There are others too.
The problem is that steroids are an anti-inflammatory agent and I do not know on any non-steroid, anti-inflammatory ear meds commercially available. When I went to an internist for MurrFee she said she has a formulation for compounding one that used the horse anti-inflammatory drug betamain.
In August I has ear polyps removed from Badger. After the operation there was still continuous drainage/infection even when using Baytril Otic and oral Clavomox.
After two weeks switched to oral Clindamycin and topical Surolan. Surolan is marked for dogs and contains an anti-fungal, antibiotic and the steroid prednisolone acetate.
That treatment resolved the infection and reduce Badgar's insulin needs by about 1/2 with much better BG control as compared with the last year when his polyps caused a continuous infection. The Surolan really did not raise BGs.

In August I has ear polyps removed from Badger.

I was wondering if Badger's ear polyps were visible or if the vet saw them deep in the ear. My civvie is having some ears issues and I don't see anything, but I wasn't sure if having a polyp really far in there would be a possibility to consider. What were Badger's symptoms? Thanks!

The symptoms was discharge from the ear and they were partially visible using an otoscope.
The polyps were also noted is the vet records that I obtained from the vet the previous caretaker used for Badger.

Thanks! I guess I'll start another thread if it continues. There's no discharge, redness, or anything... although her ears are black which makes it hard to know what's going on.

UPDATE:

Gave Nikko a little boost of insulin because his BG was +200s yesterday at both AM and PM.....Today AM(127) and PM(164).....No insulin!!!! Hopefully I will see him continue to drop in numbers over the next 10 days or so with out help and get back to under 100 again as was the case previously!!!!!! At this point.....NO MORE medicine with STEROIDS for him!!!!! Fingers and Paws crossed!!!!
