Hello everyone,

Sadly, my sweet little Toby has passed on and I'm heartbroken. He was 15 years old, had early stage kidney disease, a heart condition, high blood pressure and had gone blind a few months ago. A recent ultrasound showed acute pancreatitis and his diabetes diagnosis soon followed. I was giving him 6.5 units of glargine twice a day with no significant changes and supplemented him with potassium. Within the last 3 weeks he had 3 weekly bouts of nausea where he was drooling, head down, barely walking but recovered by giving him fluids and nausea medication. Unfortunately, this last bout was more serious and the medications didn't help.I realized he was in pain and that these episodes would continue so I made the decision to say good-bye to him. I suppose he was in more pain than i realized but I was so fixed on getting him better, and it's so hard to know when to make an end of life decision. With all his various ailments, it's hard to know what caused his pain at the end but I assume it was his pancreas.
I just wanted to share my grief. as Toby was such a gentle, sweet cat and I miss him so much already.
Thank-you for this forum.

I'm so sorry, Ann. It's so hard to navigate that fine line between helping them and setting them free. You did everything you could for Toby, and he knew that.
Hope you find some solace in knowing he's now free from pain and watching over you.

I am so sorry Ann. It is never easy to let our pets go and Toby knows you did what is best for him.

Fly free sweet Toby and watch over everyone who loves you.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I know the overwhelming feeling of deciding when to let them go, especially when your cat’s little body is fighting so many different health issues. I’m sure Toby and Minnie are getting acquainted in the Rainbow Bridge. Sniffing each other’s noses and butts and sharing the memories of their lives with us :rb_icon:cat_wings>o:rb_icon:

I realize from your insightful words, that I gave Toby the gift of helping him to cross. I realize now how much pain he was in and that he wasn't the same cat due to being blind and in pain, yet I thought I could help him get better. I made the decision at the right time, despite how difficult it was. Thank-you for helping me feel better about my decision. I think Toby helped me make it too.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Toby. You were his angel when he needed you. Prayers for you to find peace.

I’m sorry for your loss. Stay strong. You know, I think everything happens on purpose. Half a year ago, a dog called Backy passed on too. She was my emotional support animal (ESA). My sister registered her golden retriever Backy as a service dog on www.servicedogregistration.org to help me cure my anxiety issue. I’ve had anxiety for more than 6 years. I’ve been to many psychologists, but only Backy has managed to help me. I still miss her so much, but everything happens on purpose. Wish you all the best.
