my kitty’s glucose level was at 431 this morning. I just tested before giving him second dose and he is down to 181. Should I give him his usual 4 units or less or should I skip it. I’m not very experienced and don’t want to make a mistake. He hasn’t been regulated yet. He’s in Lantus. Thank you

Retested at an hour and after feeding and his level had come up to 321. Wasn’t sure if to give full dose or not. He tends to always be high in the mornings so I went ahead and gave him 3.5 units. Will watch him closely and pray

4 units is a lot of insulin to give a cat. Did you start off at 1 unit?
I can't see a spreadsheet for Brodie. It would be very helpful if you started one. Here is the link

I see you are using alpha track meter. I would not give the dose with a preshot of 181 if I did not know how he reacted to the insulin during the cycle.
You could stall if you have not fed him and see if his BSL rises after 20 mins......post the BSL and ask for more assistance........and start a spreadsheet so we can help you. Does he have a history of ketones?

On 8/23 his am glucose was 437 so I gave him 4 units, his evening level at 6 pm was 375 so I gave him 4 units. On 8/24 his am level was 367 - he got 4 units evening was down to 235 so I gave him only 3.5 and this morning at 6 am he was up to 431 so I gave him 4 units this morning and he is down to 187

Will start spreadsheet soon. I’m very new at this and overwhelmed. Thank you

Lantus works best if you give the same dose night and morning. We base the dose on the nadir....the lowest number the BSL goes during a cycle not the preshot numbers.
4 units could well be too much insulin for your kitty. Only way to find out it is get tests in during the cycle to see how low kitty goes.
If you can get some tests in during the cycle say at +4 up to +7 to start with, that would be very helpful. Not all at once but over a few days.
I am going to link this post to your one in the Lantus forum so we can just use the one post. So continue reading it over there.
Great you are starting a SS! We will help you get sorted out.
Keep asking questions. It is overwhelming in the beginning but gets much better!!:)

It can be very overwhelming, I know there is a lot to learn, we can help you along :bighug:. The Lantus forum is the best place to be for getting specific help about that insulin. It is important to be able to see how low the dose is getting your kitty, and without knowing mid cycle tests, it is hard to offer advice. A preshot of 187 on AT2 is getting down there, has your kitty ever had ketones or diabetic ketoacidosis?

no ketones or anything else. Just tested him and it has come up to 321 in the last hour since he ate. Is it okay now to give him low dose. I’ll go with 3 units instead?

What food are you feeding? That's a good jump up, there maybe bouncing from a previous lower number in the cycle. Did you see the questions over on the lantus forum as well? Let's continue over there, and you'll have more folks experienced with Lantus not just me ;).

Please post this question over on your other thread in the Lantus forum telling us how long is it since he was due for the insulin.
Note that the test of 321 is food influenced and therefore not a true reading of where his BSL would be if he was not fed.
See you over on your other thread.
