+3 288 (not yet entered in spreadsheet as I’m in bed. Will do this in am)

Theodore is puzzling me once again. I got his upc done this week and it was 3.9 which is high. Doctor feels it’s due to diabetes being uncontrolled, vessels … along with high protein food. We previously did many blood tests for heart and kidney which were fine. she wants to put him on Telmisartan and it will be compounded because the actual pill is back ordered apparently for 5 months now…? She said this may impact glucose, is this correct? Does anyone have experience with this? Also is it worth changing him to a lower protein food that increases his glucose????

also I didn’t have a chance to do a curve today as I was working. Either way Theodore’s numbers are puzzling me. He went down to 119 a few days ago and now we are high again. I’m not sure if it’s worth doing a curve or increase in am?

We've had kitties here on Telmisartan without it impacting their BG.

That just doesn't make sense. The three main components in food are protein, fat and carbs, plus a little bit of fiber but not enough to worry about. If you lower protein, you increase either fat or carbs. Is the vet suggesting some "prescription" food that is high in carbs? You could also look at food that is less protein and more fat.

You need either a curve and/or more before bed tests to say how he's doing on this dose. If he's regularly getting to around 119, that's where SLGS wants him to be.

she did not suggest a food, I don’t know which one would be higher in fat? Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking maybe Wellness CORE Grain Free Original Turkey & Chicken when looking at Tanya’s ckd dry food guide? Also if it is the kidneys letting protein out due to the vessels , would the medication even work?

Telmisartan or benazapril are one of the two drugs usually used to treat proteinuria. Neko was on benazapril, but that was when Telmistartan was just starting to be used.

As far as food goes, you can also look at Dr. Lisa's list. She has a sortable version that allows you to specify protein/fat/carb levels that should narrow down the list for you.
