I don't cry or throw up any more when I do injections so I think I'm ready to switch from the pens to the syringes. I know that there have been pictures of the boxes of syringes I should be ordering but now when I need it I can't find it. Can someone tell me what I should be ordering? I know they should have half unit markings but I am confused about this 40 or 100 designation? Also, I will still be using the insulin from the pens so am I correct that I don't put replacement air into the cartridge before withdrawing the insulin? TIA

That's awesome it's gotten so much easier for you!
There is U40 insulin and U100 insulin and they have to be used with corresponding U40 or U100 syringes. For Lantus, as it's a U100 insulin, we need U100. I'll grab some links for syringes and post them in a sec.
As for the pens, yes, you are correct. The pen has a pressure system wherein you don't want to add air to the cartridge as it could potentially cause too much pressure and break the cartridge.

Using syringes with a pen, cartridge, or vial:

• U-100 3/10cc syringes with half unit markings are the best to use for drawing Lantus, Basaglar, or Levemir from vials, cartridges, and pens.
• BD Ultra-Fine, CarePoint Vet, Monoject, GNP, UltiCare Vet Rx, Sure Comfort, and ReliOn are just some of the brands available with half unit markings.
• Syringes come in ½ inch or 5/16 inch needle lengths. Needle gauges are 29, 30 or 31 (31 being the thinnest)
• Full and half-unit syringe scales

The Relion syringes are the Walmart brand. Many people order their syringes from ADW.

Or you can get them from WalMart for $12.58/100. You want 3/10ml, 30 or 31 gauge insulin syringes. As long as you get one of these in the picture, they're the right ones.

I still have some pen needles left so not worrying until my days off. I’ll ask my friendly walmart pharmacist for help. They get quite a kick out of the prescription being under Clawdius Hopper Mouck. Lol I have to get 29g needles because the 30 and 31g wouldn’t go through his skin and bent instead. Thanks everyone for all the advice.

So it wasn't just me. Eventually I could do it in the dark but that first day at the vet still seems like yesterday. It was a Friday afternoon and I caught the tech checking her watch. Hey I'm not practicing on an orange like you did, this is my baby. What saved my sanity was switching from the scruff, too close to the spine, the eyes, too close to everything.

Oh good, just thinking ahead, I got it. That's a mouthful of a name, so cute.
When you give his shot, be decisive and fast, they shouldn't bend. I have a big thick kitty too. But I won't lecture you on technique, 29g may work better for you.

The first one actually bent at the vet so I didn’t feel like a complete idiot! I was going to call him Clodhopper because he has extra toes on all his feet. That didn’t sound classy enough, hence Clawdius Hopper.
