Dear Lantus Friends,
I had to put my sweetest most beautiful Racci to sleep yesterday, 3 months before her 18th birthday. She had to suffer about a week while we tried different tests & treatments on her but finally we just came to the conclusion that it was probably the nueropathy or the arthritis that was so bad in her legs, spreading. She was urinating all over herself and could not control herself. Sonograms, xrays, blood tests, urine tests, nothing showed anything! She must have had 10 baths a day. It was just unfair to keep subjecting her to that. I wish she could have told me what was wrong.
The little angel didn't have a mean bone in her body and has had a rough time of it health-wise all her life. She was the runt of the litter and always had a weak constitution. I helped to bring her into this world as her mom lived with me too and she was a little stuck. She had all kinds of things wrong, but was never nasty or cranky. She had a leg that she sprained badly when she was young and had to wear a cast. She later developed arthritis there. When she was little she also got her tail stuch in a door and it was permanently bent. She had a gallbladder operation to remove stones, then she caught asthma, she was constantly getting infections in her anal glands and skin around there. With all that going on, Racci caught diabetes and finally became regulated and was blue and green all the time for at least a year when this happened. Through it all, she took all her meds whithout a fuss and praise and cuddles was enough of a treat for her though I gave them to her anyway.
Racci was very lonely when her Calli Mom died 2 years ago as they were always inseparable. I am going to put her ashes next to Calli's so they can once again be my Calico Bookends. I am so lonely and sad and can't stop looking at her spot to see her beautiful face and hear her little 'meow' as she says hello to me when I walk in a room or have her come to me and ask me to pick her up on her favorite cchair where we always cuddle because she could no longer jump. I also can't stop thinking of her thinking I was going to make her better and having to put her to sleep instead. I know you all know what I mean. I know it was necessary but still...
Well, I thought you would want to know since you had a big hand in keeping her healthy for all these years despite the diabetes. I'm sure Racci' neuropathy would have gotten worse a lot sooner without your info. She caught diabetes at age 11 and lived a pretty normal life till she was 18. I'm in the middle of washing all the towels and mats & haave to put them in the dryer. I'm also crying so please excuse my errors. I'll be right back.
Hugs,
Melanie and Racci
