If you have a Walmart close by, I absolutely love their house brand Relion Micro Meter and the strips for it are fairly cheap as well. I have two Relion meters the Micro and the Prime. While the Prime has the cheapest strips out there it does take a larger drop of blood and I found it to be a fairly fussy meter as well and when using both side by side I found that the Micro actually was costing me less in strips because I got less errors and thus wasted less strips with the Micro. But it really comes down to personal choice and what matching strips fits your budget.

The Relion Confirm or Micro are the big favorites around here because the strips are affordable and they both take the smallest sample size. The meters are about $15 and strips are $35.88/100 (although in Hawaii, they may be more expensive....I know a lot of stuff is!)

You can also buy replacement strips that work in the Relion Confirm or Micro from American Diabetes Wholesale if you prefer not to shop at WalMart. Their Arkray Glucocard01 meter is the exact same meter as the Confirm.....Arkray makes the meter and WalMart re-brands it with their Relion name.

The Relion Prime takes a larger sample and we've heard some people get a lot of error messages, but others do fine with it...and it has the cheapest strips of all at $9 for 50

What's most important in choosing a meter is the cost and availability of the strips! Some of those meters have strips that are close to $1 each and when you test 4-6 times a day (or more) that runs into a lot of money

Thanks for the advice! I got the Relion Micro since it claims to need the least amount of blood for sampling. Also got the 33g lancets. Tested twice so far...not alot of drama. Some, but not alot. Got BGs of 268 and 306 so far. Been documenting the times and numbers. He goes back to the vet on monday for a check up, but I suspect that this vet is not up to date on his diabetes regimens.
