Off topic from diabetes but hoping someone has suggestions. My diabetic (Whitey) has been yowling every morning for months now. He will come stand outside of our bedroom door and start yowling around 6am like clockwork. It's not good since my wife and I go to bed later and don't have to get up until 8am so it is really effecting our sleep.

He just had his check up and the vet confirmed it is nothing medical, strictly a behavioral issue. I usually feed them all at 8am/8pm and give him his shots at that time. Since their food is long gone at 8am and 6am I figure maybe he's hungry. I thought of feeding him later in the night like right before I go to bed but if I do that his feeding/shots won't be in line because if I feed at 11pm , there is no one home at 11am to feed and give shots the next day.

So an option is feed/give shot at 8am, give second shot 8pm and hold off to feed again till 10/11pm.

I have tried felineway spray, jackson galaxy's spirt essences, the thundershirt and now we set up a barrier in the hallway to try to block them from the door but he either gets louder or brakes through it.I was going to get a child gate to block the hall but he's still in good enough shape that he can easily jump over one if he's motivated. Prozac has been suggested as well but I'm really hesitant to do that. #1 I know from experience that he will never take a pill daily. #2 the compounded version will run about $60/mo and on top of diabetes supplies I really can't afford that with my wife not currently working. #3 I feel bad about giving him a human pych drug not knowing how it will effect or change all the good parts of his personality.

But we are at the point of desperation now ...and my wife also refuses to wear ear plugs because she is prone to infections.

I feed my cats multiple meals a day. Actually, their pretty close to free feeding, now
What about getting a timed feeder and giving him a snack at midnight and another one at 4:00am?

The timed feeder seems like a good idea.

I try the play but I admit I'm inconsistent with it. But he is also finicky , some days he'll be really into the feather on a stick for 15 minutes and other days he couldn't be bothered. I'm not sure exactly how old he is but the vet estimated 12 years old during his recent physical so he's not as energetic as he used to be.

Try the food game. I have three cats and they all love it.

Rules

1. find a long open hallway or area of floor. Longer the better
2. Get a small handful of low carb treats
3. get cat to follow you to this area and give one treat
4. get another treat and wiggle it back and forth on the floor to catch his attention
5. now launch the treat along the floor's surface as far as you can get it and watch him chase and eat it. don't throw it in the air unless your guy is a jumper. it might take him a few times to get the idea but they catch on quick!
6. wait till he comes back to you and repeat! if he doesn't come back, the shoot the next treat towards him but not too close so he has to run for it Some cats find it easier on a surface with contrast so dark treats on light surface, light treats on dark surface. . cause sometimes they lose the treat.
