Teddy has recently started biting his back claws and then it looks like he's trying to pull them out. It's actually a bit creepy! Any idea why he might do this??

my cats have always done that.
they naturally shed their toenails (and whiskers) from time to time but they rarely just fall right off. using a scratching post helps get them off and self-grooming does too obviously.
he's probably done it before but you may not have seen it. either way, if it seems he's obsessed with them, i'd probably try to get a good look at them to make sure he's not having a problem with an ingrown nail or that something else isn't going on there

As Cindy mentioned, this is part of their natural grooming. They shed the "sheath" on their nails, that is how they keep them sharp. They can scratch things with the frontpaws but sometimes need to pull on their back claws. (As a side note, I think that old cats always have the super thick back nails, and sometimes front nails, because their arthritis keeps them from doing this bit of grooming.) Trimming his nails in the back will make the excess layers come off easily.

tom goes in cycles of having a good biting his nails sessions. he really goes at it too! at times i thought maybe he had a problem down there but no, he's just grooming his extra long and dangerously sharp 'tools'.
he even carefully licks between each and every toe
