So much for OTJ. :(

Well, it's looking like the honeymoon is over. :(

Tink's ventured into the yellow quite a few times over the last few days and even his "blues" are on the high side.

I'm thinking about starting out with a "drop" dosage - does that sound reasonable?

I currently have Humulin R (bought Oct 2013, bottle exp. date was Dec 2013), Lantus (bought Oct 31, 2013) and ProZinc (bought Oct 27, 2013). Would any of these still be usable? I dont want to cause further issues - but I hate to waste these nearly new bottles. Would it just be somewhat less effective, or do I run other risks??

I'm leaning toward the ProZinc just because it only took a few doses to get him regulated and OTJ last time. I know going OTJ again isn't as likely... but a girl can dream.

Only other thought I've had... do you think there's any chance that Wellness has changed it's formula without notice? Would they be able to tell me carb info if I call them? I've run into a batch of the turkey flavor that has a very odd consistency. One of my cats wont eat it. Both cans were the same lot #, and I have two cases of it... so thinking about trying to exchange it somewhere local (I buy on Amazon). But I'm just curious if the food might be the issue. I'm not seeing huge # increases when he eats, which tells me his body IS producing insulin. So I'm a bit confused.

Oh so sorry  Hopefully by you catching it early you can get him back in remission again! Lantus and Fancy Feast did the trick for me and Dusty. I just need to keep his weight under control, he's become a porker again close to 14lbs. He is a big cat though...

I'd venture a guess that's part of Tink's issue as well. He is 13.2 currently. He used to be 14, before being diagnosed. I liked him at 12 - have been trying to start tipping the scales the OTHER direction but so far it's not working. Splitting 6 ounces of wet food into 4 feedings already seems like such small amounts of food. I need to remember to try what was suggested here - in adding water to it. He's convinced I'm trying to starve him.

Do you have any thoughts on whether or not I should use the insulin I have, despite it being "old", or go buy a new bottle?

I am sorry to hear this, Jenn. I think I'd try a different food to see if that makes any difference - maybe just for Tink if you need to feed the others the other kind. You can always try the insulin to see if it works. If the ProZinc doesn't have floaties, it may be okay - you should know pretty soon by any change in the numbers. With the ProZinc, you can be a little more flexible - give a drop and then monitor and "chase" the number until it is up again to your shootable number. It may give you a crazy schedule - more than 12/12 - for a while.

I might pick up some Weruva today - it's super low carb (1-2%) and he liked it before. Maybe SEE if I can get him roped back in with diet - but it's REALLY hard to feed him separately. Still... it's "harder" to spend $200 on insulin... so it might be time to fix the lock on my bedroom door and just separate him (he can open the door currently).

On top of it all - my almost-1yr-old puppy has been at the vet since Saturday with an unknown - but major - gastro-intestinal issue. They ruled out Parvo but think it's either ecoli or salmonella. :(

They just never stop! Vacation fund?? What vacation fund??

I agree, you could try your old insulin and see if it's still potent. With home testing you'll see the results right away and be able to tell if it's still good. Dusty was 20lbs before he was diagnosed and then dropped to 11 with the diabetes :o ! Guess 13-14 lbs isn't too bad ;-) .

Ok great. I'll try the food first, as I'd rather do insulin when I can be home all day with him to keep an eye on numbers. Last time even .25u was taking him from 200+ into near-hypo numbers a couple times... so I want to be cautious.

Oh... and I did confirm with Wellness that they have not changed their formulas (although I always question how much the CSR's know). But I'll still try a lowER carb food, just in case.

Infectious disease is a gift that keeps giving. If the puppy has e. Coli, giardia, coccidia, campylobacter, or whatever, the cats could get it. Please disinfect any surfaces you can to reduce possible risk.

After usiing a bottle of ProZinc for about 4 months, with no apparent floaties or discoloration, it became ineffective for Gracie.

We should have lab results for pup before she comes home. HOPEFULLY. Given that my other dog, which she spends most of her time with, shows NO symptoms - I dont THINK whatever she has is contagious. My other dog is elderly so I'd imagine he'd get it pretty easy if it were. But you never know. Will definitely take precautions as needed when she comes home.

Tink tested over 300 this morning. :( So I gave him .25u of ProZinc. Probably should have given more, but wasn't comfortable doing so when I will be gone all day. I later realized there was a pan on the stove with some crescent roll crumbs on it - and caught Tink on the counter... so that might be why the numbers were so high. Stinker NEVER gets up on the counters - but apparently that's no longer true. Going to have to make a conscious effort to make sure all "dirties" go straight into the dishwasher EVERY TIME. I live with a teenager, so this will be a challenge.

I've now reserved myself to the fact that this week pretty much BLOWS. Between Tink's numbers, the dog at the vet racking up a hefty bill, and it being my daughter's last week of high school (complete with finals and graduation activities) - I'm a LITTLE worn out... and it's only Tuesday. @-)
