Well... we handled our first change well but she threw me a couple of reds which I don't like. Possible fur shot yesterday- just a little and today I smelled insulin but did not feel anything.

I'm changing the way I do her food- lately she has been turning down her watered down food- if it is mashed too much so it is like fine grain so... She will only get 1 oz at a time with water in it. It takes longer but she has started eating the chicken again.

Peeing less and more in stages. Slight ketones but that might have been her not eating what amounts to half each can and not getting her full dose of insulin last night.

Vickie-
I agree that her numbers haven't been great but I've only just managed to get her back on schedule and wasn't sure how much that would account for the wild ride and she has only been with 2.25 for 6 cycles with no real change but the reds although she was showing more yellows at night on the 2u but they only dipped under 250 once at that. I am thinking about also going to a 7/7 schedule until school ends in May- about 4 weeks. That way she would only be an hour or so late on school nights rather than two and her numbers might finally get down to where i can creep her back down to 6/6 in case i have to withhold her shot to raise her numbers.

At least her BGs are overall better on Levemir. I am still concerned about the trace ketones, but you seem on top of things.

The least amount of changes you can make tothe shot schedule, the better, so if 7/7 works best, do that.

I think 7/7 would be the best while I am in school. Otherwise it is build up to 7/7 for Thursday and then get her back to a 6/6 schedule only to adjust it up again in a continuing cycle. The 7/7 is better for the time being right now but once school is out a 6/6 schedule would be the greatest.

Ketones have been negative for the last two days, so that is great. The one time she had between a neg and trace was when she wasn't eating all of her food and a possible fur shot. I have changed from her bowl to a plate and that helped cut out her waste- plus I only feed 1 oz at a time.

I don't know if it is my imagination but her paws seem bigger now. We go back in May to have blood drawn and I will see if we can also do the draw for the acro tests at that time, too. He might not want to draw so much blood at one time.

What's the blood draw for in May? I don't think there should be a problem with the draw on one day, but you could ask your vet ahead of time to know one way or the other.... I don't see why you should have the extra expense for a 2nd trip back to the vet for a separate blood draw, and why add the stress on to Sneakers.

Be sure to keep an eye on the ketones until you can get the dose up to where she needs to be.... ketones can sneak up on you, but I hope they stay at negative or just trace.

The numbers look good though so far.

Her BUN is 33, which is slightly above the normal level but the other kidney test is in the normal range. The new vet just wanted to see how it would be in 6 weeks- higher, lower, the same- that way we could check and see if there was something else going on that would cause her numbers to stay high (nothing else was there but the barely above normal BUN :-D .)

My previous vet didn't even mention about testing for kidney damage because of diabetes- it might have not crossed his mind, he didn't want to to it, or he didn't even know about it. I don't know.
