Slashy constipation?

Hello all,

SS http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key= ... haXc&hl=en (I did test this am, just forgot to log it.. He was 250 something.)

Slashy has had a constipation issue for quite some time. Been on lactulose for a while. 3ml twice a day. Was not working, at least not well. After consulting w/ the Vet late last week we tried adding metamucil. Started last Friday evening. Took him off the lactulose at the same time. Saturday afternoon I saw him really straining to go (to no avail) and got afraid the lactulose was the only reason he was able to go at all. So, went out and got some but cut the does to 1.5 ml 2xs per day. Kept him on the metamucil.. Just shy of 1/2 a teaspoon 2x's per day. I have always added water to all his meals but increased the amount at metamucil/dinner time.

Saturday evening I did see him go.. he struggled, it was big and hard - no change. Next time I saw him go, Monday AM, he did not struggle. It was very large.. 5-6 inches long and about as thick as a quarter however it was quite soft.

So we have staid the course on that pattern. His amps and pmps have been sneaking down since we started. And, I think he is feeling better.. being more friendly and affectionate anyway.

I am just looking for thoughts/opinions.

Thank you!

Rick

Hi . Sorry to hear about Slashy's constipation. I'm at work and can't answer as completely as I'd like, but I've had two cats that have had this problem. The first was about 20 years ago and they also had me using what you are. He ended up having an operation to remove part of his colon. Frank, my current furbaby, has trouble with constipation. He is always constipated. MY vet told me to use Miralax..a human over the counter gentle stimulant of some sort. What I like is it doesn't bulk up. It's a white powder and I use 1/4 TSP with each meal..and it does seem to help him. According to the vet, one possible problem is that with continued use it may make the cat anemic.
Good luck with Slashy.

I have hear that the tuna oil helps too...and they love the taste normally. Some people use a dab of vaseline ..and others use a little olive oil to the food too.

I believe that Vasoline is used primarily for hairball relief.

My vet had recommended Miralax, as well. It acts to put water into the colon. You only need a tiny bit -- 1/8 teaspoon to start and mix it into food and add water to the food.

You might want to cross post on Health about this, as well. I'm glad to hear that Slashy got over the problem without an enema. And I would expect his numbers to come down now that he's feeling better.
