Sissy's medical issues

I wish you had gotten answers. It would be easier to know what’s wrong with her so you could have a treatment plan. :bighug:

My husband picked up Sissy's Ondansetron. Getting ready to give her the first tablet here in a couple hours with her pm shot. It says 1 tablet twice a day 12 hours a part, so I had to wait to give it to her. It's a 4 mg tablet. I might have to break it in half to get it down her. When my husband picked it up I asked him to see what they said about this being given with her other meds. So they called me while he was there and said the notes just said to take in place of the Cerenia, so to go ahead and stay on the Mirtazpine. I have not given her Cerenia or Mirt today because I'm pretty sure someone said the Mirt was a no go with the Ondansetron. But it kind of irritates me though that if it's not supposed to be given with the Mirt that they didn't say that. I gave Sissy 1 unit this morning. Getting food down her is NOT easy. She's not eating much on her own and I'm syringe feeding her but she is not happy about it. She's running mid 150's with 1 unit today. She was 221 for amps. I'm not updating the spreadsheet just yet until I'm done dealing with them. I'm seriously thinking of just going to our old vet and having all the stuff they've done sent to him. He was our vet for 20 years before we moved and I trust him more. I at least feel like I can talk to him easier and he doesn't think I'm crazy since he was with us for all of our animals and their issues before so he knows I'm going to take care of them the best way I can.

Remembered this morning the vet yesterday was stunned Sissy was getting 1.25...she was like..how do you do that!? I said with an insulin syringe with point with half unit markings, you go in between. So that's another reason I'm a nut because I'm sure she's thinking that can't be consistent.

How long does it take for the Ondanestron to kick in?

Hi Mandy. Iwould see if half of the pill works. If not you can increase. It usually takes about 45 minutes to kick in, at least it did for my cats. I would not give mirt too. There is a bigger risk of seratonin syndrome. Did you ask for an RX for cyproheptadine? It is ok with ondansetron.iIt sometimes took a couple of doses to work. It is ok to give both ondansetron and cerenia as they work in different ways if you don’t find ondansetron alone works. It did work well for my two that were on it.

I have to wait until Monday for the cyproheptadine, neither of our doctors were there today so it will be Monday before they get the message.

I'll try half the pill.

No. Think positive but I know how hard this is. The combo of ondansetron and cyproheptadine helped my cats and I’m hoping the same will be true for Sissy. Another appetite stimulant that works is 1/3 or 1/4 a Zyrtec regular strength allergy pill. I got my vet’s ok for Max. I also gave it to Mocha when she was scratching her ear and made it bleed. It made her already healthy appetite stronger which fortunately she didn’t need. It’s been used a lot for CRF kitties.

Well, Sissy is acting like she feels a bit better. She's been doing nothing but staying on her bed in the hall or sleeping at the foot of my daughter's bed for a week at least. Tonight she's been out here with us all night...even curled up under my chin and purred like crazy for a long time. Laid on the back of the couch the rest of the night and just smacked the dog for sniffing her face...so she's definitely feeling a little more like herself. So maybe she'll eat more on he own too. *fingers crossed.
New development. Soft stool. Earlier tonight she left a hard dark super smelly poo in her box, which is what she's been doing every few days. Just now I was hit with that smell permeating the room. She had a bit of runny poop and got in the box but not far enough so half in half out. Back in May, the day after we went to the ER she started having pudding poop and it went on for 2 straight months. I finally got it to clear up using benefiber. They had told me at the ER that it looked like her bowels were full and when she did go it would be the runs...so it wasn't the meds they put her on that night, I still don't know what caused it. We'd gone because she wouldn't eat, and was vomiting and had lost a pound and a half.
I really hope that we're not heading there again. It's probably because of all the new foods she's been eating, but you'd think it would have it before now since it's been a week or more eating new foods.

And now she's just made another big pile of pudding poop. UGh.

It could very well be the foods. The fact that she had it before yet it went away is interesting. What caused it then? I hope she starts to feel good. Being with you is a positive sign.

I have no idea what caused it before. She had been on the same food for 3 months the Hills z/d, so it was very out of the blue...came between her original sickness and ended several weeks before her diabetes diagnosis. When it first started they tried a few different meds and I think an abx. They checked her stool for parasites and whatever else they do with it. Never got an answer and I was thinking it was here to stay...and almost exactly 2 months later (may 5 thru July 4) it stopped with the benefiber.
I got some benefiber in her a little bit ago. Hopefully it will work again this time. It's so stinky in here.

We switched Sissy to the ondanestron and she is more social, wanting to be around us more and even had started eating better. So much that I thought the ondanestron would do the trick but no such luck, started not eating again last night. So just got off the phone with her vet, she is calling in the cyproheptadine. She started to tell me there is another one that works better...mirtazapine..and I said, no...that's what she's been on and is doing nothing for her. She said well the only concern I have with the cyproheptadine is it makes cats sleepy and they don't want to eat then either. So?? Has that been your experience? I told her I had questions about the next steps to find out what I should do next as far as testing and she said she would have to call me back because she had to see their next patient. Since our trip down for labs after her ultrasound I haven't heard from anyone down there, the fructosamine came back as you know but nobody had called about it so I told her I wanted to talk about her test results that have come back since the other day...so hopefully I can get some questions answered on that. She is still assuming I'm not giving her insulin, but I am giving her one unit and it's keeping her low because she's not eating much. This morning I skipped the shot altogether because she would NOT eat and syringing has gotten to be a terrible ordeal, she is fighting it like crazy. I have only gotten a little baby food into her today and dreading the next time I have to do it. I am going to wait on my husband to get home because it's no longer a one person job. I think it's stressing her out so much too that now she's even more determined not to eat. She was 93 a little bit ago when I checked her. I have been putting benefiber on some dry food and letting her have that every day because her poop is just SO mushy and we're going to have to spray her off in the shower tonight because she's not cleaning her rear end good enough. (She won't eat any wet food now so we had a tiny bit of her dry left that's about 14% carbs. I only give a tablespoon or so of it just for the benefiber to coat and she'll it.)

As I was typing this up, cvs called...and said that they had an issue while trying to fill the rx...so they called my vet for clarification and just "got a lot of attitude" and she hung up on the cvs technician! I am floored. The cvs lady said they had trouble finding the dr's info in their system so just needed some info...and that they got it and I could pick it up. She said that the vet had told her that she was going to call me and the cvs lady said she just wanted me to know that even if the dr said she was going to send it elsewhere that they did have it filled and ready for me. I've been using cvs for years, they are just a few blocks from us and we know most of the people in there, I can't imagine the vet hanging up on any of them...geez! But...I as floored as I am, I guess I'm not surprised...I told you guys she's "the expert" and there really is no talking to her.

This thread is almost a week old. Could you start a new one? We ask that people start a new post each new day that they have something to say. Thanks.

@Wendy&Neko could I change the date on the title daily? If I start a new thread every time all the info isn't there even just putting the last link in...all the info on what's going on with her is in this thread? If not, I will just start a new one in the main board and only link this one thread. It's too confusing and hard to remember everything when people are suggesting or asking stuff that's already in the original.

Mandy, I’m so sorry she’s having so much trouble. Ondansetron sometimes made Max a little constipated s maybe it will help the sift stool. My cats ate with cyproheptadine and I dint recall it making them sleepy.

Just link this post to your new one. When posts get too long and old people stop reading. :bighug:
