Hi Everyone!!

I'm new to the message board,...been mainly reading past posts and trying to absorb as much info as I can....I had a cat with diabetes years ago, and haven't given insulin shots or kept up with what are the best foods to feed a diabetic cat in almost 8 years now, so I needed to learn everything all over again. I also need to try to find some information about either pet RX discount cards or financial assistance for pets with diabetes, since I am on disability and on a very fixed income, but I love my Brewster and will make sure, no matter what, that he gets the insulin he needs.

Does anyone know the carb content for Simply Nourish Freeze Dried Chicken Cat Treats? Brewster was just recently diagnosed with diabetes and I've always fed him the Fancy Feast Pate wet food (I've always had bowls of dry food out for my cats, and he used to love it, but suddenly stopped eating it for some reason,...Maybe he realized he is diabetic on his own!)

He enjoys treats at night, and I recently found these and he LOVES them! Of course, that could change at any given moment!! Finicky pudda's!! :) I've been trying to find the carb content, because I know I should only be giving him low carb/high protein diet (right?) Going to keep Google-ing it, but just thought maybe someone on the message board might know.

This is the first time I've posted...wait,...I've already mentioned that!! Sorry,.. I've been on overload reading about diabetic cat care, and my brain is fried!! I had a Siamese cat, Tucker, who had diabetes (I gave him insulin 2x a day, it was PZI back then, and he lived an extra 5 years, which was kind of a miracle because he had several health issues, including being allergic to cat hair!) I've given insulin shots before, but it's been 8 years that he's gone now and I've freaked out about it all over again! Vet prescribed Lantus, 2 units 2x a day, and i'm using the pen (I went to my family doctor yesterday and told her about Brewster, (she also has a diabetic cat) and she wrote up a prescription for the needles used for the pen. Need to thank Venita once again, for sending me the pen,...I think it's going to be easier for me,...I took Brewster back to the vet today because I had some other questions about his treatment and she showed me how to inject the insulin with the pen, so I feel a bit more confident giving him the shots he needs.

The vet gave me a list of low carb foods to feed Brewster, and I know there is a list of them posted on this message board also, but just wondered if anyone has info on the Simply Nourish treats and wet cat food. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for your help!! This is a great message board, and I've learned a lot in the past week!! I'm going blind from staring at my computer screen for all hours of the night, but my baby is worth it!

Thank-You!!

Darleen

Re: Rachael Ray Simply Nourish Cat Treats

Hi Darleen and Welcome!

I can't find any Simply Nourish cat treats when I google - just dog treats. There is cat food which "sounds" okay, but the ingredients have powdered cellulose (which is basically wood pulp) and lots of other unpronounceable ingredients:

Water, Chicken, Liver, Vegetable Oil, Powdered Cellulose, Tricalcium Phosphate, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Natural Flavor, Magnesium Sulfate, Taurine, Salt, Carrageenan, Cassia Gum, L-Ascorbyl -2-Polyphosphate (Source Of Vitamin C), Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Niacin, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Pantothenic Acid, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Calcium Iodate, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement

If I missed the treats, maybe post with the ingredients? Then we might be able to tell you about the possible carb content.

My kitty loves Pure Bites which are freeze dried meat, chicken or fish. Nothing else. Here is a list of some other low carb treats: Lo carb treats

Re: Rachael Ray Simply Nourish Cat Treats

Hi Again!

The only ingredients in the Simply Nourish Treats is listed as Freeze Dried Real Deboned Chicken,...I don't see any other ingredients listed. So,...they're a good choice?? He's going crazy over them!! If they're ok to give him, i'll go back to Petsmart and get more bags. We watch tv and have treats together at night (well,...i have a wine cooler, not cat treats!!) :-D

Thank you for the other treat suggestions....I appreciate any help in finding good food/treats to help keep his diabetes under control...I love this pudda man!!

Re: Rachael Ray Simply Nourish Cat Treats

Please go back and edit your subject in the first post - you've got 2 different product names combined.

Its either Rachel Ray Simply Nutrish for Cats.

red = JUNK

OR

Simply Nourish treats from PetSmart - freeze-dried shrimp or chicken. An alternative to PureBites. Watch out for bones.

Just edited the subject of the Simply Nourish Cat Treat....I didn't realize it wasn't a Rachael Ray product until I looked at the bag again,...The reason I thought it was one of her products was, they were displayed with all her cat food products in Petsmart,...Never assume anything, right?? :)

Sorry about the error,...It is kind of confusing in the pet store because they are on the same display end cap. Thanks for correcting me!! :)

No worries.

The names are very similar, and Google found both when I searched. That's the only way I would have known myself.

Hi Darlene and extra sweet Brewster!

Simply Nourish freeze dried cat treats - that's a PetSmart store brand now. There are also the same brand freeze dried chicken treats in the dog food aisle BUT a warning...when PS bought it, they changed the chicken to 'human grade' which sounds wonderful doesn't it? Trouble is they use chicken with a sugar solution as preservative. The dog treats suddenly started spiking my sugarboyz, then I noticed the cat treats doing the same thing. Took me a couple of months to figure it out. That's probably just my silly boys but I quit buying them. As long as you know it's a possibility.,... :)

Pen needles - they're really handy if you give insulin in whole units BUT they're not consistent. There may be as much as a .25 unit variation, a whole dose for some of our kitties. Since we dose change by .25 increments, the pen needles can't do it. There's the same little rubber seal on the end of the pen that's on the vials - just use a regular insulin needle to draw it out. Just don't shoot air back into the pen....

HUGS!!! AND WELCOME!!!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome to the message board!! :)

I bought some of the Pure Bites cat treats today,...Good to know about the Simply Nourish treats,...Brewster's been eating them like crazy, but i'm going to switch him over to the Pure Bites if they're better,...They come in a larger bag and a better price...Going to return the other ones tomorrow....I'm learning something new every day about what are the best food and treats for cats with diabetes...This message board is the best!!

Gave Brewster his first shots on my own today,, the vet gave his first shot yesterday and i felt better actually showing me with him there, rather than watching the videos and having the other vet just explaining it to me......I was terrified, but did ok,....he didn't even flinch! :) I was so worried that he'd cry and then i'd start crying, and we'd both end up in a heap on the floor!! He must realize i'm trying to help him feel better, because he came over and cuddled up next to me and even showed off a little by scratching on the top of the couch (not too thrilled about that, but the couch is old, and i was just so happy to see him showing off and a little perkier, that i don't care!!:) He's my baby and can do whatever he wants! :)

I find the pen pretty easy to use, and he's only on 2 units twice a day for now...The vet told me to bring him back in 2 weeks and they'll test him again to see if that's the right dose and maybe he can even be dropped down to 1 unit if i can control his levels with diet (i can only hope,...but i know that probably isn't how it always ends up,) Going to try to do testing at home too, i have the test strips/meter (my mom was pre-diabetic and i was the one who learned to test her blood glucose levels) She passed away on January 20th and i'm so lost without her, and that's one of the reason's i'm so devastated about Brewster being diabetic,...He's my best friend/companion, and i don't think my heart could handle losing someone else i love so much, so soon...

I'll keep doing my homework, and learn as much as i can to help take care of him. I love this pudda man so much, as much as i'm sure everyone on this message board loves their sugar babies,....He's my best friend/companion and i want to keep him as healthy and happy for as long as i possibly can.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and for all the help! I really appreciate it!! :)

Once you learn how to home test your cat's blood glucose, you'll be able to save the cost of vet visits for doing curves, as you'll be able to do them yourself. A curve is just serial blood glucose measurements about every 2 hours from pre-shot test until next pre-shot test.

We strongly advocate home glucose testing as it helps keep your cat safe. For new insulin users, we suggest not shooting below 200 mg/dL until you have data showing that it will be safe to do so. That means that when the insulin effect peaks, the glucose is no lower than 50 mg/dL on a human glucometer or about 70mg/dL on a pet specific glucometer (divide by 18 for mmol/L)

It took over a month of pestering Pet Smart (and climbing their corporate ladder), but I finally received an email reply from them concerning their Simply Nourish treats. They said that no sugar solution is used with any of their Simply Nourish treats before drying. FWIT. I'm trying to find a place to have them analyzed just to reassure myself.
