Scary BG number

Well, Squallie's AMPS number was down considerably this morning, at 303, and his +2 was 277, so I was thinking we were going to have a pretty good day. Then I checked him again at +4.5 and his BG was 446! I don't know what happened! I don't see any evidence of this, but if he sneaked into the 18% carb dry food, would that cause such a dramatic increase? I am really bewildered, and worried!

Lucy, can you test Squallie's BG again, please? I'd like to check whether the 446 is genuine or a rogue test result. (They happen.)

All kinds of things may raise glucose levels.
- contraband
- infection
- stress
- bouncing after an unusual low number or a sudden drop from a shot
Don't get hung up on single numbers; it is the overall pattern of tests, plus non-glucose assessments such as
- dehydration?
- activity level?
- food intake
- water intake
- play?
- difficulty standing or walking?

Thanks, Lucy. Looks like the previous reading was legit after all.

Yes, the higher carb food could cause a spike like that. Some cats are uber carb-sensitive. Where might Squallie have obtained access to the contraband?

I'd recommend getting some mid-cycle spot-checks in on this PM cycle to see whether his BG level drops back again to better numbers, and take things from there. Sound like a plan?

He seems to be okay, not very active but then, he never really is. Got him to sniff some catnip, did some chin rubs and is purring. Right now he's grooming himself. I worry because his ears fell warmer than usual; I'm afraid he'll get an infection from having his ears poked so much.

Yes, sounds like a good plan to me. I thought I had collected all the "bad" dry food, but apparently I must have missed a dish, or else he got into the bag. And he is a dry food junkie so I'm sure he made a beeline for it when he found it. That bag is leaving my house tomorrow so this can't happen again.

It's just so discouraging, I really thought today was going to be a good day for him. It started out so well!

Still climbing, with 4 more hours to go! I'm concerned about him going up into the 500s before it's time for his PM shot!

See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools. He is more than a glucose level!
He seems basically okay, did a little catnip then had a nipnap. Not dehydrated, and he's been purring. I wish he'd get a drink, it's been a while since he's had a drink. Now he's asking for food, so I guess that's a good sign.

It looks like last night was MUCH better. Maybe Squallie just didn't feel very good yesterday for some reason?
I really don't know what was going on with him; I think he must have gotten into some higher carb kibble, although it didn't look like it, but that's the only thing I can think of for those high numbers. They are lower today, got my fingers crossed that he'll have a good day today!

I've heard a few bits of kibble can raise points 200+ or so.
Wow. Well, if he did indeed get into the other cats' food the potential exists for him to have eaten 1/4 cup or a little more. I guess I should be thankful that he doesn't really eat a lot at one time, he'd rather stretch his meals out through the day. Already gave that food away to a local rescue group, so it's not here to tempt him to steal it!

I know how you feel Lucy, we have a lot of days that start off good then Bubba just has his own agenda.....
By the way, Bubba is just adorable, all fluffy and handsome! I see you feed Young Again Zero Carb; how do your guys like it, and do you find that you feed significantly less than you would a "regular" food? That's what I ordered for Squallie, and it looks like my other kitties will have to eat it, too, obviously too much risk in my house to have everybody on different foods.
