Rusti's Day

Rusti seemed to be a bit more responsive today. When I talked to her her ears twitched and she was following the sound of my voice. Had the most level numbers since she was diagnosed as a sugarcat. It did fall into the 20s range about 5 hours after her am shot (0.5U) so I gave her about 1T karo. 1 hour later it was 59.

I am hoping that the electrolyte test will come up with something that is easily remedied. This poor girl has gone through so much already and she is still fighting.

That fall to 28 shows that the .5U of Lantus is too much for her, and likely caused her bounce up to the 316 PS. Might I suggest a dosage reduction to .25U?

I am glad she is having more level numbers. That is the magic of the Lantus.

Good luck at the vet today. Hopefully, the problem is her potassium and it can easily be treated.

Rather than going straight to karo with a low number. You may want to try:

A). Feeding her some hig carb wet food

B) taking a couple tsp of gravy from the hig carb wet and adding it to low or med carb food or even feeding it on its own

I suggest this because it is better to control drops with food rather than karo as it will stay with her longer not make her rise too fast and hopefully not cauise too much of a bounce after.

Good morning Margi!

Let me make a suggestion. If you had posted when Rusti had low numbers, we would have been happy to lend a hand and helped you learn how to manage those numbers with food, as Hillary was describing One of the posting conventions of the Board is to post numbers in the subject line. for example, using yesterday's numbers, Rusti's subject line would have read:
5/9 Rusti AMPS-232, +6-28, +7-59, PMPS-316
It's also helpful to test more frequently when you have low numbers and to make sure those numbers are stable and don't dip down again.

With that 28, Venita is correct, Rusti needs less insulin. You can drop the dose to 0.25u as she recommended.

Also, are you dosing twice each day?
